I tried listening to a Teaching Company class while I was swimming yesterday and became aware of just how noisy my backyard can be. Train whistles, trucks and cars on interstate, overhead planes; all stuff that usually gets tuned out.

Not my favorite version but still lovely. I truely love the vocal versions of this far more than the string versions.

Oddly I did not find Barber's Adagio for Strings until recently. I was familiar with, and was deeply in love with, the piece from the video game Homeworld but for some reason it never occurred to me to look up the original music.

I've spent most of the day listening to various renditions, Samuel Barber originally composed his String Quartet, Op. 11 in 1936 and in 1938 he took the second movement of that and orchestrated the Adagio. Much later, in 1967, he composed his Agnus Dei from the Adagio. There are many vocal versions of his Agnus Dei but there are a few vocal renditions of the Adagio for Strings. I feel these surpass the Agnus Dei, I'm still looking for a boy's choir version, which I'm sure must be out there.

(BTW the Homeworld version is by Santa Barbara's Quire of Voyces and does not seem to be available.)
