Question Maybe you can tell me if this is funny...

Dr. Drib - thank you for this comfortable place to prattle on about my own work.

Welcome to the dark confessions of a doubtful writer.

I am in the throes of discontentment. Wondering about my own sense of humor (or total lack thereof) and ability to convey it to an audience. I know my sense of humor is a bit wry and irreverent, but maybe my perception is skewed. Maybe I don't even have a sense of humor. Questioning your very ability as a writer is such a plague on productivity, let alone inspiration.

This self-doubt is new to me, and I have a whole friggin' series hanging in the balance that may never see the light of day. To shove these two manuscripts into the shadows would diabolically deprive me of a favorite therapy, and short change any readers who actually enjoyed the first in the series.

I've only had two reviews on this new release -- geeze, this is really pitiful and painful to engage in, but my ego and pocket book need to know. While one was warm and joyous, and the other over-the-top ecstatic, I am quietly wondering why the other fifteen or so recipients have been conspicuously silent. And I do mean silent. Crickets. Even family! Do I suck that bad? Will I only appeal to 10% of the population? Maybe? Maybe it's just the subject.

Who the heck knows? But I can no longer be my own judge and jury. If anyone out there is looking for new, humorous fiction and is willing and able to cut loose of a buck ninety-nine, I'd really like to know what you think of this work. I hope to bring smiles - laughter even.

I'm not looking for sympathy. Validation, yes. I am looking for an internal sense of validation that others consider my work enjoyable... at least this work. If not, then I have seriously overused the word “hilarious” on the cover.

I welcome the candid and constructive critisms of any reader willing to share on this thread and will endeavor to apply such insight judiciously to any future work in this series.

Some writers might think of this as pandering to readers, but too many writers fail to really consider their audience. Heck, I’m a reader also and appreciate a writer’s consideration of my expectations – always evident in good writing. I want to write the best books I can for my reader’s benefit. In the end that benefits me, too, because I get to keep on writing.

The book is titled, "Hardrock: Crazy Jake's Fish Bomb"

In short, it is a work of humorous fiction set in the 1979 Colorado wilderness around the Quartz Creek Inn and the handful of eclectic characters that call Hardrock home.

Excerpts beyond the Kindle sample are on-line at hardrockbooks.com

To those intrepid readers destined to download - crikey, I do hope you enjoy the read. Thanks in advance for your faith, purchase and potential feedback.

The new dedicated forum for author self-promotion is a grand idea and well used. Must admit, though, that I like the general higgledypiggledyness of this thread and the tangents it tends to take. Lots of wit and banter and good natured japing. Glad to see the free-for-all open again. Vive la chaos! Neil

Just over a week left to take advantage of the 99 cent special (66% off the full price) on my hardboiled mystery novel, IDENTITY CRISIS, on Smashwords. The special runs until July 31. Just
enter the code TE28X at checkout.

And while I'm at it, I'd like to announce the release of my new ebook short story anthology, FIVE UNEASY PIECES. It's available on Amazon for 99 cents.

Here's what others are saying about the book:

"In her introductory note to FIVE UNEASY PIECES, Debbi Mack claims she finds writing short stories 'difficult.' Well, you wouldn't know it from the 'pieces' themselves. Each rings true as a tuning fork, whether for dialogue, setting, or depth. A lean collection of gems."
—Jeremiah Healy, author of OFF-SEASON and THE CONCISE CUDDY

"FIVE UNEASY PIECES packs a nasty punch that will keep mystery fans enthralled." —Simon Wood, author of TERMINATED

"In her first collection of short works, FIVE UNEASY PIECES, 2010 Derringer Award nominee Debbi Mack creates modern-day noir worlds where voyeurism and sleuthing are as natural to its inhabitants as breathing. Never content to leave well enough alone, Mack’s fascinating cavalcade of off-kilter protagonists spy and insinuate themselves into other people’s lives – to mostly tragic effect.

"While descriptive, observational humor was a hallmark of Mack’s excellent hardboiled crime novel IDENTITY CRISIS, here she uses it sparingly, and instead infuses a handful of riveting mini-mysteries with a real sense of dread, fear, and unease that lingers long after the lights are out. Recommended."
—J.T. Cummins, author of COBBLESTONES

"Mack really packs twists and surprises into these five shorts." —C.J. West, author of THE END OF MARKING TIME

I hope you'll give them a look.

Thanks,
Debbi

I Will Last Through

A group of college friends frets on the eve of separation. Going into the world, they feel that the future sparkles with limitless possibility and that their bond is unbreakable. Quickly a sort of social gravity catches them out, revealing that for adults choices are few and ties are tenuous. Their trajectories-pulling apart, drawing calamitously close-plot the eccentric orbit of modern existence. Only bohemian Karel, through contact with the Chinese culture in Taipei, Taiwan as part of his job as a teacher of English, may achieve escape velocity.

Check out the free sample and, if you then feel so inclined, buy the novel and support an independent author.

Thanks for reading!

Smile Cries in the Dark.

Cries in the Dark is my first novel. It is a mystery/thriller with a smattering of romance. After an accident Alex discovers that she can communicate with animals. She gets a job in a chimp lab and becomes much more attached to the chimps than previously intended. Alex finds she is being pursued by a smart serial killer who has murdered at least six people. Some of the chimps have been removed from the lab. Alex's new boyfriend vanishes. Is he dead, in hiding or could he be the killer?

Alex has to resolve all of these mysteries, and confront the killer or she may be the next victim.

Cries in the Dark by P.A. Woodburn is now available on Kindle. Is also on Smashwords but there are some formatting problems that need to be fixed.
The book is over 80,000 words and good value at $2.99.

Thank you for the opportunity to add my book to this thread. My mystery/romantic suspense novel Twenty-Five Years Ago Today is now available at the retail sites for the Sony, Nook, Kindle, and Ipad and it's also available in multiple e-book formats through Smashwords. The e-version will be available at the price of $2.99 for a limited time, and through July 31, you can use this coupon code to purchase it at Smashwords for $2.24: SWS25. http://bit.ly/cPEKEW

For twenty-five years, Diana Ferguson’s killer has gotten away with murder. When rookie obit writer and newsroom editorial assistant Kris Langley investigates the cold case of the artistic young cocktail waitress who was obsessed with Greek and Roman mythology, she must fight to stay off the obituary page herself. The ebook version contains a Reader's Guide for book clubs, and a sneak peek at my upcoming reality TV show mystery Sink or Swim.

Lynn Cunningham of Fresh Fiction recently reviewed the book and wrote: “This was a very intriguing and captivating book. I found myself carrying it with me whenever I thought I may have a few minutes to read while waiting on something. On top of that, this book stayed in my head even when I was not reading it."

A book trailer, excerpt and more reviews are on my web site http://www.stacyjuba.com.

Thanks to everyone who has picked up their very own copy of Boomerang, whether it be from Amazon, B&N, Sony or Smashwords. Just a reminder that no coupon is necessary to take advantage of the everyday $0.99 price on a book that is sure to be a fun summer read. And heck, at Amazon and B&N they've even taken another dime off the price. I just don't know how long that will last.

Best,
Alan

Thanks Kevin,

Current WIP, The Baer Boys, just passed the 60,000 word mark. And you know, the more copies of Boomerang that sell, the faster I seem to work on the new one. The Baer Boys has a dachshund named The General who has a much bigger role that Oz has in Boomerang, so I hope you like him!

What do u mean by 'shameless'?

"This is not a "fluff" novel. It's a glorious "thinker". Mr. Fenn and his book will take a bite out of your mind..."

"This is a fantastic read. A beautifully crafted work of art. It's not a book to read to your kids at night, but it is real. Very very real. And very very good."

"Simon Fenn lives in Australia, often called Oz. How appropriate - he's a true wizard in the art of storytelling."

"..That, dear reader is the definition of a Masterpiece. Get it. Read it. Live with it. Think about it. Read it again."

"Don't miss this amazing book by an amazing writer.."

"Simon Fenn gives the reader a massive gift with Parable of the Forgotten. It is not a gift wrapped in bright shiny paper and satin bows, but it is a gift nonetheless. ...a gift which needs to be opened soon; much before the other pretties in the TBR pile."

"The plot, by the way, will keep the reader up late wanting to solve things along with Jarvis.....I know I will return for future books by Fenn. I get the feeling that he is on the brink of breaking into a top sellers' list."

"I laughed at something on almost every page as Jarvis is on his journey to solve the mystery."

"I have never read anything like this before. It was fantastic from start to finish, with a WTF twist. "

"The intensity of the story wore me out (just the way we like our stories to be told)! And I've picked up quite a bit of Australian slang. Some of which isn't appropriate here! Buy his friggin' book! "

"I admit I was hesitant to pick it up at first, but once I started it, I didn't want to stop... Simon Fenn is an author to read now and to watch for in the future... It's a rare book that I'll read twice, but I'm looking forward to revisiting the world as Jarvis sees it. "

"... stunning for its suspense, cleverness and reality. Its twisted humor, raw language and heavy drug use only make the novel more engaging. This is Jarvis, and you can't help but love him. "

"Wonderfully rounded and real characters, sharp in your face dialogue, a terrific plot and a humdinger of an ending. An instant classic. "

"Simon Fenn's novel vibrates with the grittiness of a life that few would ever hope or choose to experience first hand."

"Once I started reading his book, I was quickly hooked."

"I don't know who first said "there is a thin line between comedy and tragedy."......Regardless of who first recognized this truth, author Simon Fenn deftly walks that imaginary line for most of Parable of the Forgotten - An Unsuitable Mystery. "

"A great read!..... I've started reading it for a second time."

"Great, great read. ....I was certain I'd "figured it out", even feeling disappointed that it had been so obvious. But I was wrong! I underestimated the genius and masterful storytelling ability of Simon Fenn. "

"This story had me laughing out loud and then dealing with the lump in my throat brought on by its sadness ."

"Imaginative, funny, dark, and - somehow this doesn't quite cut it - 'unique'."

"The tone and pace of the story will keep you reading late into the night. Simon Fenn is a fascinating new voice in literature,"

"This book is not my typical cup of tea.....Once I got used to Jarvis's (the main character) rhythm, I was thoroughly engrossed."

"..a memorable story that will not be forgotten!"

"Mr. Fenn's deep and compelling writing drew me into the book "

"Simon Fenn is a true artist of the written word. "Parable of the Forgotten: An Unsuitable Mystery" aptly describes the storyline and Fenn's Australian slang sets the mood as a dark mystery unfolds....I've never read a book like this."

Post The Kinshield Legacy

My epic fantasy novel, The Kinshield Legacy, was first published in hardcover in 2005 by a small press. At the five-year mark, they reverted rights back to me, and so I've made it available in various eBook formats for $2.99.

Kindle
Smashwords

_______________

Warrant Knight Gavin Kinshield wants nothing more than to rid himself of the haunting visions that compel him to the cave where King Arek's tablet awaits. When he deciphers the runes inscribed in the tablet, he gains not only the magical gems the runes protect, but the right to rule as king. But the evil wizard Brodas Ravenkind has other plans: to kidnap the mysterious rune solver and claim the throne for himself.

_______________

"The Kinshield Legacy is a rousing good fantasy tale, with nice characterization and some ferocious action. These days I read primarily for business rather than pleasure, but I found myself eager to return to this novel."
~ Piers Anthony, Author of the Xanth novels

"From the very first page, The Kinshield Legacy grabs you by the throat and propels you into a world of magic, sorcery, jeweled-eyed gargoyles and a sisterhood of female warriors. A world where beyonders savage unsuspecting travelers; where a dark, yet charismatic, wizard covets the king’s throne for his own and will let no one get in his way—including the rightful ruler. He who claims the King’s Bloodstone shall reign as king. Enter Gavin Kinshield, warrant knight and rune solver, a man haunted by his past, and a hero like no other. A rousing debut from K. C. May, an author worth watching."
~ Carol Davis Luce, Author of Night Passage
