Both parents, aunts, teachers, older sister/cousins encouraged me to read. The neighbors disparaged me for reading, and their kids grew up as stupid drug addicts in prison.

My parents. At a early age it was off to the library.
And a teacher early in grade school. One day my class was gathered in the school library and she selected books for each of us. She didn't even look at the titles. Just pulled books off the shelves and handed them out randomly. This has stayed with me through the years and was a lesson in appreciating books. |

My father is a writer, my mother works in a bookstore. My childhood was so crammed with books it's a miracle I didn't develop an aversion to them.

I don't remember anyone encouraging me to read (I come from a nonreading family), but I do recall when I was sniffing books (I used to do it a lot) my mother told me it would cause brain damage. Maybe that was her way of saying "read it, don't sniff it."

Everyone around me was too busy trying to get me to stop. Hitler should have been so successful.

Yes I was encouraged by both my parents. They used to buy me books when I was really young, then after a while I was the one going to them and asking for books. I remember when I was at school, every few months they would pass out a book catalogue and you would take it home to your parents and if you wanted you could order books from it and they would be delivered to the school in a few weeks time. I remember everytime wanting nearly every book from the catalogue!!! But I always ordered a few books every time. I used to recieve books as presents from my parents and other family members.

Reading was a great way to escape an unhappy homelife. Get lost in a book and you can imagine being somewhere else and especially someone else. As an adult my life is good and I am still an avid reader just for fun! And might I say having a tough life growing up made me a stronger person and helped me give my kids the life I wish I had.

I don't remember not being able to read although I remember learning some sight words in first grade ( no kindergarten for me!) My mom always took us to the library and I was always read to by someone. We had these great storybooks that came with a set of encyclopedias we had. We read those over and over again. Of course, being born in the '50's, there weren't near as many distractions for kids as now. My mom still loves to read, and she is 89!

I don't think anyone encouraged me to read, but I was bored and no one had much time to spend with me, so I learned.
I expect if I had access to TV then I'd be watching series and movies instead though. Or to Internet... |

Both my parents encouraged me, but mostly my mom. She is still an avid reader, something my brother and I both inherited.
I also tip my hat to Mr. Harstad, my high school English teacher. ![]() |

I was an ornery child. Both my parents were readers and pushed reading. I resisted. When I was 10 they wanted me to practice guitar. I resisted that by reading instead, which I knew they'd approve of. I was hooked and would have lived at the NYC library if I could (I nearly did). But I did eventually get hooked on playing guitar and still am, many years later. Like I said, ornery kid
![]() My grandparents were blue collar folks and had a bit of an attitude toward "smarty pants" folks (I was apparently the quintessential smarty pants since I had an answer for everything, backed up by books). They tried to stop me from reading so much and wanted me to go outdoors and do "healthy things". They mostly did a far better job of raising me than did my folks, and I adored and respected them, other than the reading thing. |
