I have a SONY 505 which is a great reader. I have held out on buying a Kindle until "they got it right." Maybe the 3rd version will be it. However, since I am not in a hurry, I will wait to see what the competitors are going to do and to see if there are any issues with the initial release of K3 like firmware issues.
It still upsets me that Kindle is limited on its format support.

At least the Kindle is worth the price. What do you get for 139 USD from Apple? Some Apple socks, three bumpers or an iPod Nano???

Nice Datsun reference!

Amazon is trying to make formats irrelevant to all but the publishers and..uh..diehards They could replace every .mobi on their store tomorrow, and as long as the Kindle and apps still read the book, who else would notice?

The typical Kindle consumer probably doesn't know or care what file extension is on their Kindle book.

Amazon has always been top notch in every way for me including customer service. I have a coffee maker that went belly up 30 days after I bought it, yet my wife threw away the original box, and the instruction manual. Amazon said ship it back we will take care of it.

They've given me refunds on HDTVs, topaz books, they have been excellent in every way, including their wonderful Prime account.

Nonetheless, I have always held out for Sony Readers/ePub, but with the k3 I have given in there as well. I will keep the prs505 in the family for my wife though.

I'm also about to give in to google and get an Evo soon

If Amazon had just shut the whole operation down that would have been OK. Provided they took over (DRM) support for existing customers into Amazon proper.

But Amazon did not. They just let Mopipocket die a slow and painful death. Mobipocket is not quite dead yet.

Speaking of the forum: why not - at least - close them down?

I haven't seen the UK ones, but the American ones are pretty bad. I actually put off reading the books because of the covers. I know that is stupid, but they look like they were drawn by an amateur. The story was good but got a little overdone by book eight.

Yes. As long as there are millions of Kindles out there the small publishers like Baen, Smashwords and self-published authors are going to provide Mobi formated books.

In the slim event that they don't, I have calibre on my hard drive.

Pre-ordered the 3G + Wi-Fi version from amazon.co.uk. Can't wait, looks like I'll be cancelling my paper subscription to The Economist!

That's a good point - at the moment, UK subcribers cannot get the Economist on Kindle - it is only available via the USA store. It has been a big complaint that it is not available over here. I do hope that once the .co.uk Kindle Store opens, the Economist can finally be available.

I gave up my paper subscription when I finished studying for my MA but I ran out of room for all the back copies as well.

Let's hope so, and that the fact that the fifth image on the UK Amazon page is of the Daily Mail while the tooltip reads the Economist isn't a sign that a deal fell through at the last minute!

I have to agree, Amazon has always been top notch with me and customer service. For the few things I've had to return, it was no hassle whatsoever. Heck, I purchased a Fein MultiMaster Top, which is a $400 oscillating tool with a bunch of attachments. It comes in, I see some light scratching on the plastic body and what looks to be wear where the blades mount on the tool. No way am I going to accept that. Did the automated return, had a refund very quickly, then repurchased and received a perfect unit. Other returns have been just as easy.

I love the aesthetics, size, touch screen, and all metal body of my PRS-600, but the K3 with WiFi + 3G is soooo tempting me, especially at the $189 price point and the new screen. There's nothing wrong, per se, with the 600, but I'm tired of every book I'm looking for being available on Amazon and not anywhere else. I've done the DRM stripping, then converted, but honestly I just don't want to bother with that. Gimme the book and let me read!

Get the EVO...wicked phone. My best friend has one and I have the Droid Incredible. Love Android, just love it, and FroYo will be hitting these phones very soon.

This is a very good point.
The people on these forums are obviously very agitated about formats and DRM and technical details. Most consumers have no interest in them, they want a device that works. If it works well it is a good device, if it works badly it is a bad one.
And this isn't in any way meant to demean them, we are all the same, just about different things.
There are loads of people who are absolute nuts about cars, spend lots of time debating the pros and cons of particular models and parts and technologies. I just drive the thing, I have no interest whatsoever in how it works and whether I've got the 'wrong' technology inside it.
Whether it is an iPhone or a Kindle or a <something> games console or whatever, people will generally vote with their feet and get the one that does what they want it to do in the best way at the cheapest price, even if others may feel that they have made the 'wrong' choice.

Footnote about 3G access in Canada. I can confirm the Kindle 2i works over 3G splendidly in St. John's, Newfoundland .... Happy George Street Festival everyone!
