Hi, Florence. I hope yours are much better than mine. I had 3 little cherry tomatoes on the vine yesterday and today when I went to water them they were gone! Not dropped off the vine (it's in a pot) but just .. gone! The birds were pecking the ones before that and I had to remove them. So I have no idea what happened to these.
I have yet to even taste one this year.

my grandmother used to put small plastic bags over her indivdual fruits and veggies to keep bugs, skwirrels and birds away from them. That way she can allow them to ripen safely.

Thanks, glowhappy, great idea. I will try that when some more start. I just never thought birds would eat the tomatoes.

I once read an instruction on how to grow a whole pear in a glass bottle (start early when the pear is small and attach the bottle securely). Then, when the pear is grown and appropriately ripe, you remove the bottle - with pear - and pour clear spirits into it. In due time, you will have calvados. Apparently.

I had to look up guava, but I would guess it wouldn't work so well because of the thick bitter rind. It looks like a citrus fruit to me - how does it taste?

back when I had a BIG garden (almost an acre), that daily toll from the racoons, birds, coyotes, etc was often heartbreaking. and it was obvious the little bastiches weren't starved as they were leaving half eaten stuff all over the place

its a fruit you eat before it's truly ripen. It is tropical but not citrus. The rind is actually thin like a barlett pear and edible. The flesh is mildly sweet and similar in texture as well. The only problem is that it has loads of small hard seeds which takes up the centre and fills half of the fruit. But it's very good, you should try it

As far as I can see you should simply try to make "bottle-guava" if you have a guava tree. What do you have to lose?

I'll try it if i can get it. I tend to to pass by the exotic fruit section in the supermarket because the fruit rarely is worth it (due to the transport time etc. I assume). Perhaps I should simply wait for a time when I visit a place where it grows naturally.

My grandmother has a small orchard of Guava trees, about 12 or so. Her home is 500 miles from me, since she passed 2 yrs ago I have not visited it. But an uncle lives there and I will suggest it to him.

It's best to try guava if you can get it fresh, otherwise it will just disappoint you because it gets leathery. You'd want it when it still has some "crunch" to it.

Then I'd better wait for an opportunity to taste it fresh.

Oh the High Priestess. Ciao Florence. I am sure that your tomatoes have a strong survival instinct. For sure they had to exercise it since very little: we all trepidated after them, and that parental love has to be of some help.

Apparently can be betterd. There is a delicious pear distillate. The best commercial that I know is called Willemine (Swiss), and the trendy thing is to drink it freezer cold in tiny glasses also frosted.

What you mention is practiced in South Tyrol (Italy) and the intoxicating fluid is pear spirit.

Calvados come from Normandy. It is an apple brandy, a distillate of cyder. Delicious. Maigret drinks it. These things are so good but eventually get you blind. Stoned blind, or blind stoned.

The best, IMHO is the slivovitz from prunes. Or the rumanian Palinka. In Checkia, during an extended stay I was using a peach brandy as beer chaser, every night going home on my elbows.

You Danes, you have the best cherry brandy. I know the Aalborg. It was my first time over the edge, very funny feeling, but I do not remember a thing.

Good night to all, I am writing this while sleepwalking.

Aalborg? Did they make you drink cherry brandy? You poor thing. On the other hand "Rød Aalborg" is caraway flavoured snaps and not to be so easily dismissed Is best at lunch served to accompany pickled herring on rye bread - that it one of those magical flavour combinations.

Good night!
