We bought an Xbox 360 three years ago.
We got the extended warranty since the original Xbox we had had dies an untimely death.
After a year the new 360 gave us the red ring of death, we took it to the stpre where they happily swapped it out since it was still within the extended warranty period.
The replacement box dies over the weekend, the extended warranty expired just a few weeks ago, Best Buy can't do anything about it since their computer will not let them...

The computer wont let them!? Really!? WTF!!

I'm writing my letter to Microsoft today. If I get a negative response I'll give you all a heads up when I put all the Xbox games on ebay.

Sure I can get another console for $150, but I'm tired of paying lots of money for things that should last a lot longer than they do. When did everything become so freaking cheap!?

xbox 360! I went through 9 of them since it been out. All it does is sit on top of the tv. I have the best buy warranty plan and they swap it for a new one when I get the red ring of death. They ALL BREAK.

------

by the way, 9 is not an exaggeration. I am on xbox number 10 at the moment. You are screwed as I was screwed. I even spoke with a VP for microsoft on the issue.

Then I think my next strategy is to just take it back every year, red ring or no and tell them it is broken.

On the positive side, since we were using the Xbox as our DVD player we went out and get a new Blu-ray player. We dont have an HD tv yet, but why buy a DVD player (even though they are only $50), when in two years we'll need/want a blu-ray anyway.

Plus the blu-ray player is cool, it goes on line to youtube and netflix and a bunch of other sites. Hopefully it'll last longer than the Xbox did.

Why would you expect it to still be covered? You don't get an additional 3 years every time you get it fixed/swapped out.

One of the guys at work is on his fifth. What he finds particularly galling is that it's a known issue, affecting loads of people, and MS don't seem to be bothered.

Us too, especially after all the hassle. In the end the cost of the extended warranty has proven worthy, but the experience itself has not.
Thankfully my wife was able to take the call, I dread to think the cost and time expended using my normal method for calls, via textphone!!!!

My thoughts exactly.

And if you replace it every year then it will just cause them to raise the prices for the warranty (or the item)....

I use the best buy warranty that you can purchase.

To hell with MS and their support.

They don't know any "unnecessary information".

First line phone support works from a script, and tries to make everything fit the script. They can be derailed fairly easily.

I try to make it clear when calling that I'm a tech, and get escalated to a higher level.

It's not so much that I expected it to be covered, as it was wishful thinking. We gotten the extended warranty and I knew it was going to be close - at least it wasn't the day after it stopped working - that would really have been upsetting.

You're right about what it would do if I replaced it every year. I'm just really ticked that they can't fix a problem that they've know about and make something last for more than a few years. We'll probably not buy a new one, I'll write my letter telling them we're not, they'll read it and file it with the rest of them that they are ignoring.... sigh.
