Now zipping through Brandon Sanderson's Firstborn, a freebie from Tor.com. It's been just "eh" so far, nothing really unique. Of course, coming off A Fire Upon the Deep, anything would seem mundane.

Did I mention that I really really really like the book?
I finally read this one, (after several people recomending it to me). Maybe my expectations were set too high after the amount of people saying how great it was... but for me it was kind of "meh". Don't get me wrong, it was a solid story... and defnitely not boring. But it wasn't the kind of book where I couldn't put it down.

Maybe it just comes down to different tastes. I just fnished Iain Banks' Culture novel "Excession"... and to me that WAS one that I couldn't put down.

Just my 2 cents.

After reading book no. 6 in the series (published a few weeks ago), I've started over and have just finished no. 2.

I'm only into chapter 2 I think and it is really good so far. I'm not usually into "dragon" books... they all seem so simliar... but this one is quite different than the regular fare.

If he did mean Mistborn, I'd have to say it was pretty "meh" the whole way through...I mean, it was an okay book and I actually liked the premise and the plot--except it was slow and there were some disconnects...let's just say I didn't run out to get the next one. And I did do some skimming. There were some rather drawn out points that just weren't cutting it for me...

Your Mileage will vary. Lots of people LOVE this book/series.

Very different. It's like old-fashioned boys' adventure stories. I think she's made the dragons enormously charming - you'll see see when you get to it I admire her grasp of language - it's easy to read, yet feels 'dead on' the style of the time.

That's encouraging. I think most are similar as well, I didn't like the Palini series.

I love the idea of the Napoleonic Wars with dragons. It's such a brilliant idea, and it's carried out very well. I haven't read anything by Paolini.

I think for a young writer and considering his audience he could get away with it but the writing is lacking.

Then I will definitely not be interested. I have picked up (so to speak) his books a few times, but they never really attracted me.

My nephew just devoured those books when he was about 10, I think. I bought and read them just to be able to discuss them with him, and you know? Not too bad. They had a lot of elements common to the genre -- dragons, scrying, elves, dwarves -- and it was pretty complex reading for a 10 year old. It really taught him the enjoyment of finding a good fantasy series that you can depend on to entertain you for more than a couple of days. He's 12 now, and reads a lot, just for the sheer pleasure of it.

I loaded up on a bunch of books yesterday at a book sale, and now I'm reading "A Murder is Announced" by Agatha Christie which I picked up there.

There's a movie!

I better get a a wriggle on then. I am still only half way through ".. played with fire", and there's another one to go.

I keep losing track of the story in the second one, either I am getting old and not reading it every night, or lets not go there...

I've started reading the Repairman Jack books by F Paul Wilson. "The Tomb" is the first book, and I find that I am pulled into the story and lose track of time.
