I'm not a history buff. I don't even generally enjoy it. But I'm trying this fictionalized account of American history by Jeffry Hepple:

http://www.amazon.com/Gone-Soldier-S...007173&sr=8-10

It's interesting. BUT. I don't generally like these things so I can't guarantee I will stick with it. I once read a fictionalized account of Crazy Horse (an American Indian) by Win Blevins. Very good. Still. The truth is I tend to like much more fictional fiction. It's like the newish trend to retell fairy tales (Jim C. Hines and the princess series. Mercedes Lackey also did a series of retelling.) There's this part of me that always feels like I have read the story. And I know the ending...

Finished Scryer's Gulch. It was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to further installments.

I decided to buckle down and dig into Dog Days by John Levitt. It's not available as an ebook, and I've been holding on to the paperback for months hoping the publisher might issue a digital version. At least the next 2 books in the series are out in ebook format.

"Mason used to be an enforcer, ensuring that suspect magic practitioners stayed in line. But now he scrapes out a living playing guitar. Good thing he has Louie, his magical...well, let's call him a dog. But there are some kinds of evil that even Louie can't sniff out. And when Mason is attacked by a supernatural assailant, he'll have to fall back on the one skill he's mastered in music and magic-improvisation."

I agree... just finished Excession and I by far enjoyed it the most. Though anyone just getting into these novels would probably want to read a few of the others before tackling this one. I've always enjoyed the aloof, sarcastic nature of the AI's, and to have a novel whose whole plot centers around them was great.

Hang in there. The action does pick up nicely. I can also recommend the movie. Ditto for The Girl Who Played with Fire

I just started reading "His Majesty's Dragon" by Novik, Naomi. It has a very good start. This was nominated in the MRBC but didn't win so I had bought it since at the time it was $0 in the Kindle store.

***It's been 3 months for me and I'm still not 1/3 of the way through this book!***

You display great sticking power, Glowhappy. That's about as far as I got before I deleted the entire trilogy I'd bought on the grounds that the author simply didn't know his job. Turgid doesn't begin to describe this work. Cheers. Neil

Since posting here last time I have read Brechalon by Wesley Allison, Dreamshade by AJ Lath and Tales from the Green, Book One, by Steven Best.

I'm working my way through Scryer's Gulch, (MeiLin Miranda), which is being published as a serial so I'm trying to read it a section at a time as I catch up to get the serial kind of feel. It is throughly enjoyable.

I'm also part way through Tales from the Green, Book Two.

All of the above are by MR members, that is my compromise in looking for good stuff in the mountain of material at Smashwords. I don't poke around blindly there as the good-find-per-time-unit-spent ratio is so low, I just follow links from here to see if the books look worth reading.

Brechalon is the novella prequel to Allison's Senta and the Steel Dragon (fantasy) series and showed enough interesting world building for me to go ahead and buy the rest of the series that is out to date. You don't really get to know the characters very much but there are interesting glimpses into what may be people to care about in future full length books.

Dreamshade and Tales from the Green are children's books, fantasy's both. Both have a few rough places but were worth sticking with. Dreamshade has a premise I've never seen before, having to do with childhood "imaginary" friends while Tales from the Green seems at first glance to be pretty a standard quest-elf-dragon but the author has a sense of humor and throws in enough twists to keep me interested.

In paper I finished (rereading) Wizard Hunters by Martha Wells and (in a startling departure from the recent fantasy binge) reread Over My Dead Body by Rex Stout. I only reread top flight books and they both fit that description.
