Controversy is not usually a cause of quantity posts. If you want talkiness, think Twitter. Like the "What are you reading/drinking/listening to?" threads, go for something like "What are you currently eating/wearing/hallucinating?".

...with important regional differences. You can't run out people that are different...
Well, I'm very politicized (if that's a word) but I don't discuss them unless I'm with some people who swear that they can tolerate someone else's views. Voting is secret and that's why. This place has shown over and over that it's strewn with prejudiced people who think that since everyone is far away and not next to them, they can say any mean thing they want. That's verbal violence, the equivalent of a physical beating and it's not tolerated. Period. No politics and no religion is a rule, does seeing a speed sign make you sick? We're here to discuss reading devices. It's been expanded to content. Like any classroom there are back benchers, of which I'm proud to be, who always do other things that they're supposed to do. But fight I don't and will not. I do enough of that in my head. This is a lounge, a place to find peace and listening ears, a place to RELAX. Away from boss, work, family, good taste and partners in life... Any pressure. |

My objection to your statement is about the friggin "This is not an American Site" -- I am fully aware of that and am sick of getting that particular thing thrown back in my face (particularly by moderators) when it doesn't apply. Now, as far as what the Lounge is. You may have specific ideas of what YOU want to be, but that doesn't mean that's what other's want it to be. The Lounge is a place to discuss non-ebook-related items. Nothing more, nothing less. When you start telling people what they can or should post YOU are causing the controversy, not because the post was on any given topic. We discuss religion and politics and all kind of things all over the board, there is no ban on them except if certain moderators decide to object in certain situations. |

Rules, guidelines, recommendations...all meant to try keep the peace and friendliness. Politics, religion do get a mention:

Personally I'm going for the 21st Century and next million posts to become known as the Unutterably Silly Age, and I intend to be there, no matter what I have to sacrifice, and to which of the Great Old Ones, but that's just me. I'm hoping it's Will Ferrell, and to the Dark One that is the eater of pink-and-sugary souls, Hell Oh! Kitty, but, you know, I'll take what I can get. Cheers, Marc |

Monts, certainly I'm aware of the mention and even agree with it, but my point is really that many many many books - fiction and non-fiction deal with politics and religion and are discussed all over the forum and it is rarely limited to the text of the book itself. Even non-book related politics are again discussed all over the forum. -- Take the Global Warming thread for example. Totally contentious and certainly political but it goes on as do many other threads that deal with politics -- such as the illegal immigrant threads and others. It is only when certain beliefs or statements are expressed that threads are closed or posters are warned or banned. I know it is a difficult job to manage a heard of wild cats -- which is really a good analogy to internet posters in general. Posters and Moderators must use their best judgment as to what to post, what to allow etc. depending on the nature of the particular forum. Sometimes those posts and decisions are good and sometimes they are bad and different people will have different opinions about them.
Onward to the next 2 million! |

Any debate that is healthy should be both allowed and encouraged; it is when the debates turn into mud-slinging, then degenerates further into name-calling; that we lose sight of the aim of the Lounge.

And on to the next million...
My views of the future are rather pessimistic. This wolrd is a kettle on a fire and boiling point is approaching. As things get worse I hope that MR stays a neutral zone away from it all... |

Agreed. And that's what's somewhat disheartening. I'm a believer in that you can discuss anything, any topic, any point of view if you stick to the high road. But unfortunately that is rarely the case in most forums. (there are a couple of fourms I visit on occasion where it is more the case than with most).

My point, Ken, was merely that, while there is no "ban" on them, explicit mention of them is made of both politics and religion in the Guidelines, and the recommendation there is generally away from those topics.
What one chooses to do with, and how one interprets that guideline, and the others, is an individual matter, but in the end they are meant to "guide" the community, and the Star Chamber/mods, in what is desirable and in that ambiguous "for the best". That's all. Not arguing...just pointing out that there is a guideline relating to politics being discussed, though not an explicit "ban". That there are guidelines on discussion. That it's not completely an anything-goes thing. That guidelines guide posting and moderation. That's all. Cheers, Marc (Not wearing his mod-hat) |

We certainly are! I consider myself to have learnt from this exchange of ideas - an exchange which was not a disagreement but a coalescing and clarification of empathetic ideas and, perhaps, ideals.
Regardless, we're good. Let's gang up on everyone else, while they're weak and disorganised! Cheers, Marc (Give me two million or give me death!) |
