What Fonts are used in various eReaders? What Font options are available?

More like an "hack" from fb-reader. The format itself have to mention of fonts right ?
The fonts don't comes from the format, they comes from the app. I stand corrected, the mobi format don't deal with font at all.

Unlike ePub, where the editors can say what to use and where.

Like I said, a matter of philosophy.
More fundamentally, and the thrust of this thread, is that when comparing reader devices font support, the final word comes from the reader app and how it is designed to work.
Some apps submit totally to the hardwired file format while others give the power to the user. FBReader, btw, in all incarnations follows that guideline. It ignores hardwired formatting in ePub. So, no; FBReader180 is not a hack but rather a fork that adds a control panel to dynamically edit the stylesheet in use.

ePub may let you define dozens of fonts but if the reader app ignores them it makes no difference than if it defined but one and relied on the reader app to parse the tags according to an external stylesheet. To some this is a bug (especially if they are editors hellbent on forcing *their* choices upon the paying customer), to others it is a feature (Let's say the paying customer who really wants all his books formatted to the same font style and size).
In the olden days the editor/formatter was the ultimate unassailable authority on how a book was to be formatted. Those days are gone. (Unless we're talking pretend-paper pdf.)
Today the ultimate authority is the rendering app.

Which is why end-user typographical controls are proving to be a value-add for many ebook buyers. It may "peeve" editors but we the readers pay the freight and we get to have it our way. Even it means reading in comic book sans.

(Or more realistically, 28 point Georgia, like my mother.)

One last time: file format typography is secondary to the rendering app. Fact.

Monospace Baskerville? That’s hard to imagine. Are you sure about that? I don’t have access to an iPad, but Baskerville is a classical serif font, definitely not monospaced, unless this is a very strange modified version.

If you care enough about fonts to start a topic on it, I don’t see why you wouldn’t take the trouble to make your own PDF files not only with the right fonts and font sizes embedded, but other good typographical features like kerning, ligatures, and so on. Jellby's ePub to PDF conversion script (now available in a few different versions, searching here at the forums) works well for this. Long live PDF--still the best eBook format for reading (if not for distributing)!

for sony 600 , u can change the font used by the reader by flashing with the "russian-fied" hack. but u need to prepare the fonts first by changing some setting with font creator.

Since hardly any manufacturer's sites tell you the SIZE your ereader can display, let alone the TYPE of font used, like I said in the OP I thought this was interesting enough to share.......

out of the 150 ereaders on my looked at list http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...en&output=html I dont recall ANY stating what size they displayed at almost ALL just said adjustable font sizes....

And I need a fairly LARGE font size....

Reinforcing the Cybook Gen3 option, it does let one use any TTF he/she wants, and change between them at will.

I myself use Arial Narrow (hate to read serif fonts), but have also a TTF font I have made of my own handwriting just for the fun of it… it’s neat to sometimes read same pages of a book in one’s own writing…

The Kobo eReader uses Baskerville Georgia, Verdana and Trebuchet. But I think yer also allowed to load custom fonts.

I believe that you can use both TrueType and OpenType fonts, too.

Maybe a bit late now, but the wiki matrix does suggest font size changes https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix : for instance 20 levels on the Pocketbook 360 - though I accept it doesn't explain how large 20 would be relative to the screen size .... (though the Gen 3 is BIG)

On the Sony PRS-505, with PRS+ installed, I can change the font of epub documents "on the fly". As long as the font isn't hard-coded in the epub document, I can create a style sheet for any font, as long as I upload the font to the reader. Currently I have dejavu, droid, fontin, gentium, helvetica, verdan and georgia fonts installed. I can switch between them any time I want. (Now if only I could choose more than three sizes.)

My Cybook Opus has 12 font sizes, but since I recently installed a few of my choice, I've noticed it can vary widely what those 12 sizes are depending on the font. Georgia size 12 is massive, but Droid Serif size 12 is more moderate. So I suspect that is why no company specifies as point size, since every font is going to react to the "get bigger" command a little differently.

It might be worth posting pictures, if someone has a chance.

And thank you to this thread - I had no idea Opus allowed custom fonts and have had all sorts of fun trying out fonts today.

The Iriver Story appears to have one sans font for menus, don't know which one, and one serif font for books. They come in three sizes, small, medium and large.
