I know I had it when I ate lunch today. I ate out by myself and read. I ran one errand after that, then went to where Dad is at. at first I did not have my purse with me, but then needed to pay for him to have a pedicure so went to get it. I don't recall having taken it out there, but have already called there and they could not find it. I went to 4 other stores after. I have such a routine about taking things out of my purse and making sure that I put them back in if I do. I will retrace my steps tomorrow... but who knows.
Oh KK!! I'd be frantic. I'm so sorry, and I hope you find it!

Define "full OS". All of the dedicated readers have an OS under the hood, probably based on a Linux kernel. What differs is the underlying functionality they expose to the user.

The iPad got knocked for not being multitasking. That seems to have been a deliberate decison on Apple's part to conserve battery life, though the restriction will apparently be lifted in the next OS release for the product.

Conserving the battery is a major issue. There's an active discussion on the Linux kernel developer's list prompted by it. The Android developers submitted patches that would let the device suspend all activity including the kernel to conserve the battery when it was not actually in use. The changes are already in the Linux kernel Android uses, and they wanted to propagate it upstream to be a standard Linux feature instead of maintaining what was essentially a custom fork and having to reapply their changes when a new Linux kernel release was issued. Some folks on the kernel dev list see this as an application issue and think suspending the whole machine is the wrong way to solve the problem. But the situation is probably summed up by the dev who said "I haven't seen anyone else propose a solution that addresses this issue. Do we grit our teeth and put it in, or try to deal with forks in the code required if we don't include it?"

Since people using the Linux kernel in a device don't have to compile that code into their kernel, it's not a big deal if it appears in the source.

PVI announced a prototype 12 bit color eInk screen in December 2006 that they expected to have in volume production in 2007. It never appeared. I'm guessing they either had problems ramping from prototype to full production, or couldn't produce in volume at a price a manufacturer would pay. (And I strongly suspect 12 bit color would be inadequate for applications that could make real use of color support.)

Main thing I want is the tablet format that works wirelessly and is open and compatible with my existing applications, data, etc. And has a reasonable battery life -- 6 to 10 hours...

One can hope, right?
One can hope, but holding one's breath while doing so is not recommended.

Tablet and wireless are easy enough. "Open" requires definition. And battery life is inversely proportional to screen brightness.

P.S. I love that pinch zoom thing on my iPhone.
I wonder if Apple has tried to patent it and block anyone else from implementing a similar feature? Probably...

AFAIK, they all license Adobe's Mobile SDK to handle PDFs, so they theoretically could all do the same things.

(At the Kindle DX launch in NYC, an Amazon rep stated that PDF reflow wasn't supported, which had me scratching my head a bit. My guess was to avoid problems, as Amazon was going for the textbook market. How do you reflow multi-column text on a reader?)

Over the pinch-zoom feature? Ah, well. "Look and feel lawsuits" have been with us since the MS-DOS days, and show no signs of abating.
