If you have 32-bit Vista, don't put any 64-bit anything on it. It will cause you major problems.

SP2 requires SP1 be installed before it will install.

An excellent site for Vista is this one: http://www.vistax64.com/

They have walk throughs for fixing a number of Vista problems in the tutorials section.

I have 64. I am having a hard time getting SP1 on it. it says it has it then it says it doesn't have it. I'll try that link from my laptop at the hospital later. thanks!

perhaps there is a way to uninstall it, if some damaged version is still there, and then install again...?

You're welcome. There are also a number of Vista Gurus there who can help if the tutorials don't.
