Currently reading Half The Sky by New York Times columnist Nick Kristof. Really eye-opening stuff! He's definitely not a journalist for those with a weak stomach.

***Of Mice and Men -- Incredible!***

Couldn't agree more, Kenny. The title's from a line in Robert Burns' masterpiece, 'Tae a Moose*: (from memory) 'The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley, and' leave us nought but grief an' pain for promised joy.' The poem -- written in Lallands Scots dialect but with an English translation -- is well worth a read, too. Very best. Neil

Just finished The book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, it was a powerful and emotional book. I have to say though that the ending was a bit disappointing, even though whilst I was reading I sort of hoped it would happen. I actually like books not finish how I hope they will, it leaves more of an impact on me. Does that make sense?

I'm now going to go onto what I have been led to believe as light entertainment reading, Book 1 of the Stephanie Plum series.

Actually, True Blood is a spoiler for the books so it's best to have read the book first that the current season of True Blood is based on.

I've given The Sheepfarmer's Daughter a break as I'm finding it nothing special so far and I'm just past 90 pages.

I've started on [i]The Sinner] by Tess Gerritsen and it's quite good so far. I'm at 50%.

Now that would have been a much better read then dull and insipid Thirty-Nine Steps (thirty-eight steps too many).

I've taken a break from The Sheepfarmer's Daughter as well (and I voted for it, go figure!). I'm about halfway through it. I really enjoyed the first quarter or so of the book, but it's slowed down a fair bit, and I've started reading "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ", by Philip Pullman. I am also re-reading "American Gods".

Finished two books yesterday

Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon- not as good as her other book I read. I don't think I am in a great hurry to buy more from her.

Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris- not as bad as I thought, given the reviews. Not my favourite of the series as I am not a fan of short choppy chapters, but not bad.

Currently reading Look Again by Lisoa Scottoline. Meh. I'll finish it because I paid, but it's not the best book ever. I am getting a lot more from the library these days of this type of book and only buying books I am desperate to read. My spending is a quarter of what it was last year.

Sounds interesting; I just downloaded a sample. The Washington Post reporter who reviewed the book said the story follows along lines laid down by The Jesus Seminar. Of course, The Jesus Seminar never suggested that Mary gave birth to twins, and most of those scholars dismiss the birth stories altogether as later add-ons to the true biography. Still, I'll give it a look-see.

I'm 82% through The Sheepfarmer's Daughter. It's starting to pick up slightly.

I did not vote for The Sheepfarmer's Daughter because I wasn't sure if it would be a good read or not. But I did vote for a book I knew would be a good read. I voted for The Princess Bride. So far, we've had (including this month) two month's where what I voted for lost and what won was/is nopt all that good. So next month, let's all vote for what I voted for so we can at last read something good.

Just finished Sheepfarmer's Daughter, and I can't say I have any interest in reading further into the series. It's just too darn slow and the fantasy elements, while they may be coming, needed to be *here* instead of promised later.

Next up is Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" since I need a little non-fiction break.

I love Bill Bryson's stuff. I suspect a heavy dose of fiction in some of his non-fiction, but it just adds extra entertainment value.
