One of the first things I did when I bought my first PDA several years ago was to put technical documentation on it to have at work. Very shortly thereafter, I was reading ebooks on it.

More recently, I had to give up on reading on a PDA, due to screen size. Sadly, I'm in the majority of those over 40 who need reading glasses. Even with reading glasses, I now find that my Nokia N800 is about as small a device as I want to read on.

It seems that I have been hearing about eink and other wonderful, new ebook technologies for as long as I had a PDA. All the while, waiting for these technologies to appear. At least with the Visiplex screen, it appears that eink has finally arrived in a form that I would find acceptable. Of course, we're still waiting on all the other technologies :-)

The first thing I put on my first Palm was technical documentation, too. The second thing I did was load the collected works of H. P. Lovecraft. HP servers to H. P. Lovecraft. It seemed like a perfectly logical transition to me.

Jim Baen had a very simple policy regarding eBooks. He let Eric Flint and others start the experiment, then looked at the change in his bottom line as a whole. He looked at the big picture not the little picture, it made a difference.

I've tried the HarperCollins thing on my iphone and it is completely unuseable. They didn't allow for reflowing. You have to pinch and expand (versus the standard double tap) and you have to wait for each page to load separately. It's a nice idea, but terrible execution.

Not huger than a book, really. Anyway, you're e-ink phone comment reminded me that we've got the Motorola Motofone at work for review. It's super simple and can't do anything beyond calling and sending an SMS but I was very impressed with the screen. It's an "Electrophoretic Display (EPD)", is that the same as e-ink? I'd like to have a smartphone with that screen, quite nice and brighter than the Sony Reader. Don't know why Moto has made the characters on that phone so huge...they're hardly legible! Silly.

Anyway, just going off on a tangent and hijacking a thread here...sorry.

Update: I just had a look at that Motofone product page and saw their terrible pictures. They do not do the screen justice at all.

Pictures never seem to be able to capture e-ink faithfully.

So when will you be posting your review of the Motofone, grimo1re?

Yes. EPD is the correct "technical name" for eInk.

Images *can*, but you have to 'work' at it. No straight-from-the-front, pop-up-flash-on-camera shot is going to do it well. Which is why I've now invested over $200 of my own money for a lighting and light-tent system to capture the images I'll be posting in my review of the Cybook Gen3. Gosh! Anyone feel rich enough to go to my blog page and make a small donation? I'm living on disability income here.

Well, I won't actually as we don't actually review products. However, that doesn't stop manufacturers from sending us phones. <shrug> We don't mind My colleague is using the phone at the moment, he doesn't like the fact the characters are soooo big. It is a nice and flat handset though. Featureless, but that was the point.

Maybe characters are big to compensate for lack of backlighting. You would still be able to see with little lighting at all.
