Kindle outside US - Newbie

Hi Guys,

I just got a Kindle 2 from a friend in the US. I live in Dubai.

I have the following issues:

1. Kindle firmware is version 2.1 .. I would like to upgrade to 2.5
2. It is not registered.
3. I have created an amazon account. Amazon didn't ask me about the country of my residency.

My questions:

1. Can I use my Dubai credit cards to buy books and download from usb or should i buy gift cards and use them?

2. Do I have to specify that I am a resident of the US or it doesn't matter?

3. How can I register the Kindle in my name? I have registered online by adding the serial number but the kindle still says that it is unregistered; which is understood as I can't use the wireless feature.

4. Should I register before upgrading the firmware? or it's doesn't matter? can I just download the new software firmware and upgrade?

You can't register it without Whispernet access. Don't worry about it - it won't stop you from using it.

Thanks for your reply. So do I just upgrade the firmware? do I lose anything if I don't register it ?

You should register the Kindle with Amazon - that will allow you to purchase books for it. The Kindle itself will continue to say "unregistered" until it goes somewhere that has Whispernet access, but that will in no way prevent you from using it.

There's a workaround to "register" without Whispernet: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87686
Else some of the features of the newest firmware aren't available.

Can I upgrade to the latest firmware without the registration? The workaround needs the kindle to be already on 2.5 .. my kindle is on 2.1

You don't need an US credit card.
Any valid credit card will do (I have a German one).
You can have numerous accounts respectively numerous residencies per account. You can switch back and forth between accounts. For example, Amazon has sent my Kindle DX Graphite to my German home address, although they see my US address on some of my orders. Since the introduction of the international versions of Kindle, they don't mind.
You need to register your Kindle on the Amazon website in your account ("manage my Kindle"). Your ebooks will be DRMed (copy protected) based on the serial number of your reader you give in that account. You have to register every single reader. Online units like iPhone do this on their own, with others you have to do it manually.

You don't need any gift cards. You can use your home credit card, even if you define an US account.

so is it possible to specify a Dubai address and use my Dubai credit card? just a reminder, Kindle international is not available in my country (UAE)
