HELP! 505 is frozen, won't shut down
Had a strange thing just happen to my 505 Reader. The battery was drained unexpectedly, so I recharged it thru the power jack and it seemed OK. A day later it was dead again, so I recharged again overnight (ac adapter). It seemed to work ok, but it would not shut off (sleep mode) using the power switch. The switch slides properly and doesn't appear broken. I also checked the various menu items and no music is playing or anything (I don't even have any songs loaded on my Reader.)
The Reader still wouldn't shut off, so I went to the utility menu and tried to do a full shutdown that way. The screen turned grayish (low-contrast mode)and an octagon appeared in the middle with an exclamation point. The title bar at the bottom reads "Shutting down..." It's been like this for an hour. Holding the power switch does nothing. The tiny light next to the power switch on top is flashing yellow. Plugging it back into the charger does nothing except turn the tiny light red (with the yellow flash too). Update: I tried the regular reset (reset button in back and sliding the power switch). No visible resultexcept that the flashing yellow light next to the power switch is now off. I can't do a hard reset because the power on/off switch has no effect. (I'd rather not delete all my books and have to reload them, but I will if I must!) Any ideas??? Last edited by DrMoze; 06-26-2009 at 01:27 PM. |

Ouch
![]() You have been around the forums for a while so you have probably seen the following ideas... but maybe it is one you missed or it may help someone who is new and reading this thread.. ![]() I found this ... https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49117 Quote:

I've noticed that the main thing all the help mentions is to make sure that the Reader is fully charged from the wall (not computer) just to be sure of a full long charge... And to be sure that you have backed up your books before resetting... I have my fingers crossed that I don't encounter this problem on my 505, and just in case, I save these help threads in a folder in subscriptions. Hopefully, it is just a "not fully charged" problem and you will post back that all is well. Good Luck. |

I did check up on these options. Reformatting is not an option because my Reader is grayed-out and completely non-responsive. This freeze-up occurred just after an overnight full charge. (I NEVER charge it from the usb connector.) Hokking it to my pc via usb and trying various combinations of reset and power switches does nada.
Any other things to try??? |

After some combination of usb connection, reset button, and power switch, I was able to get my Reader responding but still would not sleep.(It was 3-4 bars charged.) I decided to go to the utility menu and simply reformat. It seems to be working fine now.
On the bright side (I guess), I went thru my ebooks and reloaded a 'new' set of books to read! I always have copies of all my ebooks available on my pc. Didn't have to reregister my Reader with the Sony Library or Adobe DE. |

What combination did you try with the soft reset? Did it have something to do with reset and power switch at same time?
I'm glad you were able to resolve the problem. |

Did you upload any new ebooks recently to your reader? In RTF format?

I'm not sure the exact combo. I tried pressing reset, then power on/off, then release reset, press& release reset then power on/off, etc. The reset instructions are never clear on what order to press AND RELEASE the switches. But something canceled the greyed-out "shutting down" screen. ANd then I reformatted from the utility menu.
As for books, the only thing I've added in the past 2 weeks or so were 2 ePub (pdf) books from the NY Public eLibrary. And they were working fine for over a week. I'm puzzled. |

Thanks for posting back here. It's always nice to have the information in case it happens to someone else.

As a further update--still not sure what happened to freeze up my Reader, but it's been working fine since I reformatted. (Even with the borrowed library books reloaded.) Could the memory become corrupted somehow? I had about 200 books on it, with fairly frequent deletions/additions over the past 1.5 years or so.
