new kindle that works with nodrm/dedrm?

Is there a new kindle I can buy from Amazon that will allow me to use nodrm/dedrm? My old Oasis is giving up the ghost. I would really like to be able to convert the kindle books to epub and read them on my kobo.

In a word, no. New Kindles are no longer compatible. Your best bet is to buy an old, used Kindle (not newer than 2019).

Oh well, screw it. I'm throwing in the towel and buying a new kindle. It's a bitter pill for me to swallow because the Kobo UI is far superior.

Buying a used Kindle is a gamble because I may not be able to register it with Amazon.

If the books you buy are mostly DRM-free, you might be able to download an epub version from Amazon.

FWIW, there's a complex process that liberated DRM on (some) Kindle books from an older version of the Kindle for PC app.

If you don't mind the expense, the Epubor app automates that process (but costs money).

Folks here tend to object to Epubor because the author basically repackages other peoples's work.

But, in the right circumstances, its worth the money.

eBay is the worst place to buy a Kindle because many sold on eBay are blacklisted. They are either stolen or lost. Trey Goodwill. I bought my Kindle Touch from Goodwill.

An older version (depending on how old) of K4PC will not download new Kindle eBooks and if old enough, it won't download any eBooks.

I've bought three old Kindles on ebay--one K3 and two Oases.
Of the three, one was indeed blacklisted.

It's the firmware version, not the model, that is the issue. Firmware up to 5.18.4 has DRM that is cracked. Most new Kindles still ship with firmware that is below that, excluding the newest Kindle Scribes that come with 5.19.x. However, you must prevent them from updating right away by choosing not to let Amazon pre-configure your wifi and performing other steps like filling up the storage so there isn't room for an update.

If you don't want to risk it at all, do as others have suggested and get a Kindle that just doesn't have updates beyond 5.18.4, which are 10th gen and older.

I have bought a lot of kindles from eBay (6 in the last year) and all have registered with Amazon without any issues. Three of them were Paperwhite 1’s (6th gen). If you ask a seller first, by message, if the device can be registered with Amazon, and they say it can, and it subsequently couldn’t, then you should have grounds to ask eBay for a return.

There have been reports here that filling up the storage didn't always help and Kindles were still updated.
