Some weird UI performance in new version.
P1 & P3: Labels and icons are overlapped in Layout menu. P2 & P4: The icons in All actions menu are lost. And the new folding menu is a little weird for Chinese language — I can tell it’s applying alphabetical sorting of Pinyin, but why it’s not display as letter but Chinese character. Is it better to sort by similar functions instead of alphabet? Then, the plugin actions are so a little, should have no need to fold. (P3, P4: v7.26; P1,P2: v8.0.1) Btw, including old versions — Tags Browser in the left side bar are based on alphabetical sorting all the time (P5 & P6). But Chinese alphabet and English alphabet are displayed in separate, the English alphabet is at the bottom (P6). In my view, they can mixed together, it’s totally enough and even has a better readability, to just display in English alphabet — if it’s doable, of course. Lastly, in the new version, the app icons (Editor, Viewer, Calibre main application) for the macOS version is not referencing the app icon from the icon pack. Dock icons are no longer going to be dynamic, that's the price you pay for getting them framed. As for missing icons in menus, that's macOS specific and will be fixed in the next release. I dont see the issue with the Layout button is it specific to a particular icon theme? Try it with default icons.
As for Tag browser partitioning, that's a totally separate issue and nothing to do with calibre 8 as such. |

I didn't know macOS can display app icons from icon packs...
Regarding Layout menu, I usually have all buttons show but I've temporarily set it like you and I don't get the overlaps on Windows and Calibre 8.01: |

As the dock icons, since already decide to get them framed, I suggest rotating the inside original icon until the edge of the book parallel to the outside frame’s edge. Because now it’s produce some kind of “Induced tilt illusion”, it makes the icon frame seem tilted to clockwise. (P2, P3) Just for looking better, honestly it’s not a big deal. Users still can overwrite the icon in information window. As for Tag browser partitioning, yeah I know it’s not calibre 8 ’s issue, it just came to mind while talking about alphabetical sorting. Layout button looks fine for me in macOS. Not going to worry about it unless someone else can reproduce it, it's likely some combination of font size and some other setting.

In that case, I'll wait for next version see what will happen. Perhaps it has something to do with the disappeared menu icons?...

I dont think so it works on my mac with or without the menu icons. Are you using the system default user interface style by any chance?

If I use default style, it’s even worse, it displays a transparent background, see P2. Last edited by redbreast; 03-22-2025 at 11:54 AM. |

Yeah system default style is generally very poor, only calibre style is properly maintained.

I also get some overlap with the icon labels and icons themselves on my Mac as shown.

This issue has better performance on ver 8.1.1, but it still has some padding over the buttons. Is it inevitable? If it is, consider this is closed!

Yes that's as good as its going to get. Basically this is caused by a bug in Qt which affects some mac systems. I worked around it, but the proper fix has to come from Qt
