@NSILMike use [.spoiler.]blah blah[./spoiler.] -- without the dots.

Or in Advanced mode select the text to be hidden and click the red crossed eye - second row third from the right.

IIRC Scientific American requires a subscription to access most of its website content nowadays, so unless you are willing to subscribe and send me your account details, there's no way to fix the recipe.
