How do I access on a second computer

I have loaded calibre on my desktop computer

My wife has a laptop, and I would like her to be able to use the same calibre.

I tried to find out how to allow her to do so, but am rather confused by the answer.

I then downloaded calibre on her laptop, but that is a different installation and I dont know how to connect it to my desktop

Can anyone help please?

Well, there are a few options I can think of...

Put the library in "the cloud" using a service like DropBox, Box or Copy and point Calibre to it (this would make a local copy of the books on each machine, also would give you some backups in case something happened to one of the machines).

Share your Desktop drive and map the drive from her laptop and point Calibre to the library on it. Or setup some other network hard drive and connect both Calibre installs to that.

With either option make sure only one of you is accessing it at a time.

Setup Calibre Content Server and have her access books that way.

Or just copy the library over to her computer each time you make a change. Make sure changes are only made from one machine.

thanks for your suggestions. it sounds complicated to share the content. it appears it might be easier to copy each time I change the main computer. how do I do that?

@thistlebarrow2 - Which operating system(s) do you and your wife use - Windows, OS/X or Linux?

How to move a calibre library from one computer to another: http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....ter-to-another

As noted, moving between different OS's can cause problems. Mainly an issue of case sensitivity in filesystems, I believe -- so Windows/OSX should be fine (???) since they both default to mangling filenames in an agreed-upon manner.

You can store a library on a flashdrive/external HDD, and direct calibre to look on the flashdrive/HDD. If you frequently change computers, I recommend this! Linux and OSX should have sane locations, but Windows uses drive letters () so if you will be using only on Windows computers, I suggest you use Calibre Portable to run calibre from the flashdrive/HDD using relative paths.

We have Windows 7 on both the desktop and the laptop.

It might well be better to have her collection on the laptop and mine on the desktop. But it would be good to be able to transfer new books from one to the other.

I have read through the manual but, to be honest, just did not understand it. I am not exactly a novice to computers, but though I use them I find it hard to understand them.

For example "direct calibre to look on the flashdrive/HDD" leaves me baffled. I know how to copy information from one computer to the other. But how would I "direct calibre..."?

I appreciate that this probably sounds rather stupid to those of you who understand the system so much better than I. But a simple step by step explanation would be really appreciated.

Thanks again for your assistance and patience

As per the FAQ link, when you start calibre for the first time it should ask you where your calibre library is located (screenshot #1). You just select the folder on the HDD/flashdrive.

Or if you already started calibre and it created a default library, you can add a new library from the Switch/Create Libraries dialog (screenshot #2)

You can also use calibre portable instead. It will save all settings/library and stuff on the flashdrive/HDD. Simply move the Calibre Library folder (as per the FAQ) into the "Calibre Portable" folder, replacing the (empty) one that was created when you installed it. Then run calibre directly from the flashdrive/HDD.

@thistlebarrow2 best way to start - KISS

This is what my partner & I do.

Start a new email to partner. In calibre open the book folder (press 'O'), this will open the folder in windows explorer. Drag the epub, pdf, whatever, to the open email and drop it, attach love and kisses, send email, close the book folder.

When the book folder is open do not delete, rename or change anything - period.

When the other half sees the email they drag the attachment out of the email onto their desktop, and from there they drag and drop it into the calibre book list, and then delete it from their desktop.

We do much the same with photos, weblinks, video clips etc etc.

BR

... Or highlight the right books, click on "Connect/Share" in the calibre toolbar and select
Email to ==> <Select Recipient>

Not sure what I have done, but I have lost all of the books on my calibre! I have not sent them anywhere, but they are no longer showing. I still have them in the calibre library folder on my hard drive. But I don't know if they have all of the tags and ratings I entered.

Is it possible to recover my original books?

Question: Are you sure calibre is using the right library folder? (Perhaps it got switched?) You can check the current library folder from the Switch/Create Library dialog (above).

If the database got mangled (calibre is using the right library with all the book files):
  1. First, copy your library to a backup folder. (Backups are always good.)
  2. Then, run Library Maintenance ==> Restore Database.
It should rebuild your library based on the actual files in it. Hopefully that will fix it.

I have found the files, but do not know how to complete the process
The steps I have followed are

click on connect7share icon
connect to folder
select Calibre Folder
Open device icon
show books in the main memory of the device

What do I do next to complete the process.
