convert hangs

When I use the convert feature, such as converting from an epub to mobi, immediately after adding a file, the convert operation hangs. If I close Calibre after adding a file, reopen, then convert there is no problem.

My system is a 2.6 gHz Pentium 4, running WinXP SP-3, 1 meg memory, 200+ gigs free disk space, Calibre is the latest version, but this was happening on previous versions.

Is this normal? I also have Firefox running, but minimized, and AVAST running.

Is my system just too limited in memory?
