I personally don't mind it too much, because it's like writing all over again for me. Often times (almost always) I'll make major changes and throw lots of stuff out.
The tedious part is the endless typo-hunt |

I'd like to throw my hat into this ring, if I may. Coming from a background in screenwriting, I have always said that the rewrite is where the magic happens. In the initial draft of anything we have our sculptures block of clay. Some in the film industry like to refer to it as the "puke" draft. To me, that is an insult to your creative process. A painter has canvas & paints...A sculpture, a block of clay, stone or wood. We writers create our block of clay from a fantasy of thought. There, I'll shut up now.

I like "puke" draft. It's honest -- and it reminds you that there is no shame in despising your imperfections.
![]() Someone once advised me to think of the first run as the "0th draft". You know, the one that's full of bracketed notes like [LOOK UP DOG'S NAME], that you would never, ever dream of showing to anybody. I like that, too. |
