the first time i saw liseuse for ebook reader, it was enough in context that it was pretty obvious what it meant. that's all i need from a word - to understand it. being as so many words in english are in fact NOT english at all, i have no problem with the term "liseuse".

Also true, but...

People are using the word in thread titles on this forum. Which makes the confusion even bigger

Don't most foreign words that end up in english get used with the same meaning in both english and their original language, which most definitely isn't the case with this word since it is only used in that manner on here.

Also, as far as context, while it is generally possible for somebody unaware of the random usage of this word on this forum to guess what the author meant, that seems to be a needlessly isolationist and unfriendly approach to take to potential new members and only applies in the case of posts since its use in titles clearly won't have sufficient context.

It is interesting to note that doing a search on Google for this word primarily returns hits related to the original meanings of this word. Most, if not all meanings found related to the book reader meaning, seem to only point back here. On the other hand, searches on Google for "livre électronique" usually return information related to electronic book readers. All that does not really prove anything about the validity of the word, but does seem to indicate that there is not really any movement towards the adoption of the usage used by a few MobileRead posters.

If people want to use a French word, wouldn't "Lecteur" ("Reader") be a more appropriate one anyway?

Not only would it be more appropriate, it's more euphonious. I think it would be a much better choice.

I'm glad that most people think it's horrible. Although I don't hate it. It's hard to pronounce and it's not clear what it means.

Do most people really look only at the thread title? If the original poster feels comfortable using liseuse in the topic, I should think that would be acceptable. If you read the title and don't like or understand it, it is completely your choice to select it for viewing. I would think, however, if you do choose to go further, once you've started reading the thread you will understand the word as it is used in context. Afterall, we are all readers (or writers) here who have learned the art of reading and understanding words in context. I am loathe to say it, but I still think all this angst over a word that does not one any harm is over the top. The whole concept smacks of censorship to me.

i don't find it either isolationist or unfriendly, but i try to be a pretty laid back person. it didn't take me but seconds to figure out what it meant, and it took me longer than that to figure out all the different ebook readers in the first place.

Seems to me that this silly word is rather in disfavor here at MR. Well done!

Anyway, it is time to put this silly word to rest.
