Yes, or you can fold it back under the device, or you can just remove it altogether.

One of the most annoying things about normal books, especially paperbacks is that you have to constantly hold them open. If you set them down on the counter, or try to place them on a reading stand (e.g., on an exercise bike or elliptical), you lose your page.

It may sound funny but it's one thing that draws me to the idea of an eReader is being able to go hands free more easily.
The cover has flexibility to it so you can bend it
all the way back behind the reader while holding it.

Sometimes I've placed my reader down and left the cover
open (I try not to do that, though!) while going into another
room.

I will restate again my opinion that the standard case is a hazard waiting to happen. Given the way mine broke (falling a couple of inches onto a foam mattress) It's far less protection that it appears. And I hate to think how easily I could have broken my reader if it had broken while I was holding it mostly by the case (my default reading grip was and is to hold the back cover between the knuckles of 2 fingers with my thumb holding the front of the reader where just above the page forward on the right. Though now I have the far superior Tuff-Luv case it's with my left hand rather than my right).

The i-nique Tuff-luv isn't perfect either though. The reader slots in at the top and while it's a tight fit to start with it does loosen up some. So I would add one or more clips on the top edge that you would have the thread through holes and clip to the back. And a handhold on the back to slip your hand through for that extra bit of security. And a non-contrasting stiching. Then IMO it would be perfect. (What fussy? Me? Naah!)

On the other hand, both from personal experience (mine's been knocked of the nightstand by the cats a couple of times with no failures), together with the fact that we've not seen a lot of reports of failures here, I can't really agree that it's normally particularly weak...

Thats true. But it was only after it broke that I considered that it really was only held relatively lightly and that all the pressure is on a relatively weak bit of plastic.

Compare that to a case which holds the reader securely like the i-nique. Which one is more likely to fail?

Someone in another thread described the included cover as "over engineered" and I've got to agree.

The default cover isn't genuine leather is it?

I'd hate to think my efforts to spare the lives of trees has resulted in the death of some poor animal.

Nah, not real leather. It's plastic (but not super crappy plastic)

Um....leather is a byproduct of animals slaughtered for meat.

Leather sounds like the perfect "re-cycling" method to me.

Well, I am a vegetarian... so maybe it's animals you slaughtered for meat.

But in any case, it's not a concern, since it's not real leather

I haven't slaughtered an animal for meat in, oh, years and years. But I gotta say, it was a rewarding experience.
