Actually, he is asking if it's possible to change the serial number. Jailbreaking was a side question, in so far as it would help him to change the serial number.

Only bad things are bound to happen if you were to change the serial (if it even is possible).

You will save yourself and potentially some other random, uninvolved third party a lot of headache if you just send it back to amazon and have them deal with the problem.
