Ok on 6 of step 6 I place the hotfix in place, but I cant do an update, when I go back it has disappeared. When I go in to update update is black for a split second then grey's out and the hotfix file has disappeared, so it ran OK? I Will wait for advice......

If it is jail broken, then you can install USBnetworking and the Rescue Pack (Cowards Rescue Pack addition not required). Then using KindleTool, open the Amazon 5.8.7 update package for your device and follow the manual "de-bricking" procedure to re-install the contents. I.E: Consider your device running 5.8.8 to be 'bricked' is probably the easiest way to get you headed in the right direction. |

Sorry,
From your link. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275877 So I got to, ========== Download and install the current 'hotfix' The current version is attached to its release post, see: Jail Break Survival Code Spoiler: Unarchive the release archive package. Connect Kindle to PC with the USB cable. Place the Update_jailbreak_hotfix_*_install.bin in the topmost, visible level of USB storage (alongside of /documents). Eject and/or Safely Remove (term depends on OS) the Kindle, USB storage. Remove the USB cable. get stuck here --------> Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Update Your Kindle but I cannot update the kindle, but the file is there in root initially. and the "update Your kindle" is briefly black for a second and goes greyed out and the hotfix file disappears from root So its applied itself? which sounds weird.... |

Please update you "info box" to indicate which model Kindle (by our nickname) you have or mention that information in every post.
If that did not work, and it didn't, then install it with MrPI. |

According to the first page it says I am jailbroken...so I'm a bit confused. I cannot however update it from the factory initial bin.

You would only have to replace it. "factory initial" means: The first image that is ever loaded on a device, while still in the factory, solely for the purpose of production testing. It is not intended to be used anywhere but on the assembly line. And is normally replaced with the customer firmware before shipment. The only reason we use it, is because it can be jail broken. But your device is already jail broken, so what is the point? |

I got to step 6 but I cannot install the jailbreak hotfix as per instructions. So I simply stop now and run the kindle as is? ie I am not to care about the reest of the instructions? so I assume I can jump to the later steps and stop the Kindle "automagically" upgrading? |

This is as far as I have got, I dont seem to be able to deploy the jailbreak or at least it appears not but the kindle has "you are now jailbroken" in the initial page but I do not know how, hence I am confused. All I really want to do is lock the kindle in this state, so it cant upgrade itself to 5.8.8, assuming the web browser now works, I cant test that until tomorrow |
