thanks, all. i ended up deciding i didn't need 3G and ordered the Wifi from BN.com to take advantage of their free shipping, then a very nice cover from Amazon. did go into a Best Buy to play one last time and noticed the $50 gift card poster was replaced with a large "correction" notice clarifying that this promotion ended with the price drop.

called squaretrade today and they said three years of accidental damage protection would run around $35, so that was an easy decision.

pretty excited about this purchase, in particular having recently discovered that the last two physical books i purchased were in the PD, & printed directly from Google Books pdfs (one including the same stray marks and underlining from the original).

Well, I bought my replacement nook from Best Buy Thursday night. I got the $199 price and the $50 gift card (their sign said good thru 7/3) and they were trying to ring up an additional $50 off on top of that but the register wouldn't take it. I never did follow their logic on that part but I would have been happy had it worked.
