Its a nice piece of hardware, and I love the instant-on and the battery life, but that doesnt mean I have to be an apple fanboy and I certainly can voice my disapproval over their closed ecosystem, and their intentional leaving off of features to entice an upgrade every year Last edited by volwrath; 04-11-2010 at 02:46 PM.

Let this "fanboy" help you out a bit... Companies pricing things for more than they cost to produce so they can make a profit, that's called capitalism. I recommend an economics course or book to help educate you. If people are willing to pay the price, Apple is willing to take your money. Paying a price and then calling it "overpriced" well that's just whining. You knew what the cost was up front, so don't complain about it, makes you look foolish. You certainly could have waited until the price dropped, apparently you had to have it now. FYI: you have time to take it back, you'll only pay the restocking fee. |

I saw the Best Buy Ad today. They are pushing the Sony as a 3G reader with a built in dictionary. It is $100.00 cheaper than the entry level iPad. If Apple can come out with an iPad Mini for $400.00 they could crush everyone. Provided the wireless works ofcourse! |

Based on past experience with apple, I imagine with the 2nd gen they'll just scrap the 16GB model and sell a 32GB for $500, so I'll probably jump then if there's not an Android tablet or something I like more by then. Can just play around with my girlfriend's iPad in the meantime!

Hopefully all the bashing will subside as the newness wear's off. I've been on Mobileread for quite awhile and the Apple forum is by far, more aggressive and full of complainers than the other forum's. I hope it settles down and resumes the productive debate that charaterizes the other forums on Mobileread. As for the iPad, I've had mine for a few days and have been pretty impressed. There is certainly nothing else like it yet on the market. It's not perfect, but it's a pretty solid first effort. I never thought i would consider replacing an e-ink device with an LCD, but the iPad has me leaning in that direction and I've been using e-ink devicess since they first hit the market. |

I really don't think the device specific forums should be so full of debate and arguments. They should be place for owners to discuss their devices, and for people thinking of buying one to come and learn about them from people who own them IMO. Pros and cons are welcome, but in a friendly and constructive manner, and free of bias from people that just don't like the device and/or company that makes it. All the debates, arguments, dislike of the company that makes them etc. should be in the General Discussions forum IMO.

People constantly say you can buy a laptop for the price of an iPad. I'll be in the market for an iPad at the end of the year if nothing else is available for PDFs. I have no thoughts of selling my Sony 900, as it fills a particular need nothing else can. Last edited by SCION; 04-11-2010 at 04:06 PM.

[QUOTE=Tamara;867296]For $100 more, you get a larger color screen, web, email, photo and access to 150,000 apps ranging from streaming Netflix to the weather, etc. By comparison, Sony's Daily Edition seems kind of pricey for a device that can only do one thing. The Kindle DX has the same size screen as the iPad and can also do simple web browsing for a comparable price to the iPad.[/QUOTE The pricing debate confuses me as well. Comparing this to the larger ereaders and it looks pretty darn good considering what you get. And the battery life they've managed to squeeze out of it diminishes that benefit of e-ink. E-ink still has better battery life, but not enough at this point to rule out the iPad as a viable contender. I would still like to see some improvement in the reading applications for things like adjustable margins, better PDF support, background and text color configuration, etc., but I'm sure those will come in time. |

People who read a TON and love e-ink for the screen and battery life can buy a reader. People who want a tablet that can do video, internet and all kinds of stuff as well as read can by an iPad or one of the other tablets that will roll out in the near future. People who want to do all that but have full computing abilities, a keyboard etc. can get a laptop (or netbook if they want something smaller and don't need the processing power of a full laptop). Different strokes for different folks, and it's great that we have so many choices! That's why I hate all the bickering, arguing etc. Who cares what type of gadget someone else prefers? Use what you like and let others do the same. Few things make people look more pathetic than holding hatred towards gadgets, the companies who make them and getting online and bashing them and the people who use then. Seriously, those people need to find something more constructive to do with their time!

And I have until April 24 to take it back, so Im definitely going to put it through its paces first. Besides costs aside, its a great device now and will be a better device once jailbroken. Last edited by volwrath; 04-11-2010 at 04:33 PM.
