Typical Quebecois swearing. Mostly phonetically imitated religious object names. We use them as punctuation in a sentence tabarnak!

Will you stop, o**** de c***** de c****** de s******** de saint-c******!

I like to think that Québec has more swear words than any other nation! Then again, I'm guessing I shouldn't be so proud of it!

Modification of the word "tabernacle", to be precise. You do have that word in English, right?

Yeah. Why is it a swear word?

I'm guessing it's a "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" derivation: instead of being really bad and using the Lord's name everytime people felt like swearing, they started using religious termology. It stayed with the swearing tradition and became worst than usual swearing.

For an interesting answer, see this!

edit: I did not expect it, but wikipedia has a Québec profanity page!

Quebec has a long history of Catholic domination. Anything sacred was considered target for the rebellious and punished by the Church.
Since religious practice has dwindled, this kind of swearing is not considered "tough guy speak" anymore, just a form of punctuation like the Anglo-Canadian "eh!"

But I like the sound of it...
