The Little Black Book of Stories by Antonia S. Byatt. Literary ghost stories. "Little Black Book of Stories offers shivers along with magical thrills. Leaves rustle underfoot in a dark wood: two middle-aged women walk into a forest, as they did when they were girls, confronting their childhood fears and memories and the strange thing they saw–or thought they saw–so long ago. A distinguished male obstetrician and a young woman artist meet in a hospital, but they have very different ideas about body parts, birth, and death. A man meets the ghost of his living wife; a woman turns to stone. And an innocent member of an evening creative writing class turns out to have her own decided views on the best way to use 'raw material'." |

Furry Fantastic - more weird animal SS Soulless (Gail Carriger) - a cynical(?) take-off on the Victorian spinster/vampire/werewolf/steampunk novel - I've just started it but it's clever so far. P.S. Thoroughly enjoyed Shantaram too! Last edited by poohbear_nc; 10-13-2009 at 08:34 AM.

I just bought Wild Cards: Busted Flush, 19th in the series, Edited by George R. R. Martin. I waited over a year, I think, before the e-book came out, then down to a reasonable price, before buying it. Man, I'd pay good money if the entire Wild Cards series was available in e-book formats... Yay! |

Please don't go by my judgment yet as I've only read a little! It's chronological, and I've read her childhood through American Graffiti, so I'm not to the part where she starts sleeping with her father yet. I wonder if I'll start reading tabloids after this or if I can somehow clean out my brain. I'm comforted to hear that there are others like me. |

Sadly it is now being held hostage up north where I stupidly forgot my reader last weekend. Will be spending next weekend up north retrieving and enjoying the last half of it. Mel

I just bought it from Amazon, based upon your mention here on MobileRead. I just finished reading the first 3 stories (I think there's 41), in between my time on "The Lords of Discipline." Thanks for mentioning this title. Remember: The only thing that can keep a putrefying zombie down is a dead cat - and my microwave is working overtime! Don
