) for .pdf's, as someone else mentioned. If NYPL (or Overdrive) was offering nationwide access for free, now THAT would be news! Now for another question. Is the Sony Library software only available if you have a Sony reader device? I went to the download page and it doesn't seem to be the case, but I couldn't tell definitively. |

Nope. Anyone can download it and use it on their PC/Mac. You will have to activate/register it if for some reason you wanted to buy a book. I know a few folks that use it just to get whatever freebies and read them.

Ouch. I just checked on eligibility and ebook availability for the Chicago Public Library. Yes, I can get a card for free, though I have to go to Chicago for it in person, can't do it by mail or online, but their ebook selection just plain SUCKS. Only 191 titles in their mystery section. Although it beats the 2 (count 'em, TWO) titles in ebook at my public library.... |

Well, I know the charitable institution I'm donating to if I win the lottery, I suppose. My library! Give them a multimillion dollar grant reserved for building a decent ebook collection.

Nope, not in person yet, but here and here is some compelling evidence to the quality of the 600 screen. Looks pretty great to me! But then, I have a 505 and a 700, and I pretty much use the 700 all the time... so I may just be blind. I am pretty happy with the limited lending opportunities here in King County and Seattle... but I think things might be getting even better on that front soon. Time will tell, but Sony's relationship with Overdrive and the public library system may be a bigger factor than is apparent now. But then I am not the bushiest pickle on the fig room jar. I kinda suck at analogies too. Last edited by Donnageddon; 08-26-2009 at 01:33 AM. Reason: I am an idiot |

All in All a nice new lineup. The 300 is going to be great for the new crowd, the 600 hopefully a pleasing hybrid of the best of the 700 and the 505, and the new daily edition.... well, I'm not sure where that fits in, but it's nice just the same.

![]() The built-in library support is great, though the NYPL misunderstanding had me shaking in my boots. As a legitimate NYPL cardholder I know how difficult it can be to get popular titles, and despaired at the whole world getting free access. One issue that I hope that have fixed in the new readers, and will retrofit to the 505 is multi-library support. With the 505 you cannot read books checked out from two different libraries - it can only support one authentication source at a time - the other books will be unreadable on the reader. I'm not sure if it's specific to pdf, epub, or both, but it can be a pita. Buddy |

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/ubbt...0&Number=34238 Overall this video seems to be a much better comparison that one of the earlier ones posted. I must say the slight loss of contrast for the gained touch functionality doesn't appear to be as much of a tradeoff as the other video made it appear to be. I really like how Sony has integrated the dictionary lookup. This is much, much faster than the Kindle process. I can't wait to see a Daily Edition in person. It just might get me back in the Sony camp from my Kindle DX. Last edited by Mr. Goodbar; 08-26-2009 at 01:32 PM. |

A better name for Sony #3 would have been "Sony Stretch".

Kind of reminds me of a limousine. I wonder if the xtra length will cause more screen breakage, or if they'll use the flexi screen on this one and that's why they won't be able to ship it till late this year. I have a feeling the stretch may only become available in the US because of the wireless but I don't really care since I favor the 600. |

Thanks for the links Donnageddon! I love the dictionary look-up and handwriting capabilities! And with the better screen clarity, all I have to do now is start dropping hints about how much trouble I'm having reading on the 700 and how much better it would be if I had the 600.

Knowing my husband as I do, he's almost as big a push-over for new gadgets as I am, so it won't be long before I get the 600!
