System restart needed every update?
This was the first thing I notyiced about Calibre 9.x - the reversion to requiring a full system restart every update. Can we look forward to this tedious and often invconvenient time-consuming hassle once again no longer being required at some point?

I ran the beta versions and all of the 9.x versions and I didn't have to reboot at all. I'm running Windows 11. |

I've never needed a system restart with a calibre update, and didn't need one with 9.x versions either. I use Windows (11 now). What OS are you on?

I used to need one with older Calibres, not with any of the 8s, but all the 9s have required it. I'm running Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC

I've had that very occasionally, not with V9, earlier releases. I've just ignored it with no apparent negative effect. But that's on Win 10 Pro.

Next time try installing immediately after a fresh boot… assuming you can.

What I notice is it is becoming more common to see stuck calibre.exe processes. More noticeable when doing frequent calibre restarts. I sometimes forget viewer or editor open, too.
In such cases, the workaround is to kill all of them (e.g. using system informer, process explorer, task manager etc.), then right click the msi installer and select Repair. This way I am always able to bypass the restart requirement. |

It's never been required, as long as you shut down all running calibre processes before installation. And the calibre installer checks for the main calibre.exe process itself. Why windows decides a restart is required sometimes has always been mysterious.

Thank you. I guess I'll just have to open Task Manager before each install - faster and less hassle than restart.
