This thread is confusing. This is only AI thing I see. Be nice if way to disable the tab because I wouldnt use it but people acting like its everywhere is weird.

Yes. All this is inactive unless you have configured an AI provider.

Lots of folks are dead set against the mere idea of the AI code being in calibre, even if inactive by default. Well, tough. Kovid said he's not ditching it.

Personally I don't care whether it's there or available by a separate plugin.

There's also a Toolbar/Menu item "Discuss book with AI"

I entered the AI Key from Google. Now when I enter a request I get "HTTP Error 400 Bad Request" I know the problem is mine but any help appreciated.

What columns did you check to be sent? Leave only title and author, then it should work.

Columns? I have no Fields checked. In Settings - Metadata it says Title and Author are always sent. And in Quick actions I have tried it with all items checked and unchecked.

Only if Kovid stops the biweekly or so releases for bug fixes, etc. I suspect the bookshelf view will end up in a calibre beta release thread to get wider testing before a release.

I'm assuming that the shelf view code is in the shelf branch on Kovid's github page. Note the current branch is already multiple commits ahead of the shelf branch.

The bookshelf is merged into master but it is nowhere near ready. Needs major performance work for its layouting and most of the keyboard mouse interaction is missing as well.

And yes when it's ready for testing it will become a beta, probably a beta for calibre 9. There are not going to be anymore releases in 8.x because apart from the bookshelf I have also updated calibre to use Python 3.14 and Qt 6.10 which both require beta testing, so will be rolled into calibre 9 beta.

The hybrid view I wanted is probably way too much work to implement:
