Yes, that's true, unfortunately. It also soft-bricked by itself once and it took ages (~2 months?) to get it back (I had bought it at a brick&mortar book dealer, who was busy selling books, not so much with caring for an electronic device.

How I wish that Sony would get back in the game with a cloud enabled PRS for 2025 and beyond. Their design and software were so classy.

I thought the first Paperwhite was a 5th generation device?

I think they mean the Paperwhite 2 (Kindle 6th generation).

Probably but I seen several threads where the confusion between generation of Kindle hardware and model numbers have been the source of errors so thought I would ask for a clarification.

Ok I wish Kobo would enable cloud reading and backup for sideloaded content (like their sub brand tolino does in Germany)

Cloud reading is an obnoxious invasion of privacy and has security issues and needs Internet.

Backup is trivial and I regard "Internet" as an optional extra for backup. It's not true backup.

I like that the Kobo ereader can be used without ever connecting to the Internet, even if you buy ebooks from Kobo. I have other things for connecting to the Internet and even my own hosting (cheaper than phone contract and similar cost to a KU subscription. Cheaper than PayTV / Streaming subs by far).

If Kobo wanted to enable this feature, they would have by now. I think this is their incentive to buy books on their store.

Part of it is tied to Canadian privacy legislation. If they stored the information for your sideloaded books, they would have to give you access to the stored information. Which pretty much ends up as a security issue waiting to strike.

I agree

Aiso EU

I'd not be surprised if Amazon monetises Send To Kindle. It doesn't accept Kindle formats, which is suspicious.

Tolino allows uploading to the cloud, Pocketbook allows uploading to the cloud. EU regulation is not the problem.

Boox, Remarkable, Apple, Amazon do it too. If it was a regulatory issue it would not be possible on any platform in the EU.
This is just Kobo seriously believing that anyone is going to repurchase anything to be able to read between a reader and their below subpar apps.

Cloud storage and syncing are two different things. Syncing wouldn't help me as I only read on one device.

As for storage, that would be more handy. I use a pc, phone, ebook and tablet. Seamless Cloud storage eludes me.

Are you discussing sideloaded books not purchased from Kobo? Or books purchased from Kobo and synced to their ereaders and apps? Books purchased from Kobo are able to sync reading progress, etc. between different devices and apps. Sideloaded books loaded on Kobo devices and apps are not able to do so since there is no cloud storage for the sync to be passed through. In Canada, if Kobo started keeping track of your sideloaded books, they would have to allow the user access to that information. For my purposes, I use calibre to transfer reading status information between my ereaders.
