Just to make sure- I downloaded the book The Sublet by Greer Hendricks, an Amazon free First Reed with a publication date of April 1 2025 on my laptop. Loaded into Calibre version 6.23. Converted to epub, no problem. Read in MapleRead CE on my iPad.

IMHO Peeks tend to NOT have encumbrances that the full edition does. |

Strange. We were all under the impression that anything older than 2.40 wouldn't download post-2022 books, but it seems some older versions still do.

Kindle for PC 2.4.0 is recommended because it is the newest version with removable DRM. If that becomes blocked by Amazon then it is likely that all older versions will also be unusable.

What is with the post-2022 limit anyways? I can't figure out why they left older books still able to be de-drmed. Do they not have KFX copies of those?

I don't think it's a technical reason. Just a random limit Amazon imposed in their ongoing efforts to discourage DRM removal. As the pre-KFX versions of Kindle apps were by far the most used for this, Amazon disabled new books for those. Why they didn't disable everything, no idea. Certainly not because they have no KFX for older books - if you download an older book with 2.40, you'll get a KFX.

It is an incentive to update the software without blocking older versions completely. I assume they did not do a hard cutoff because they realize that some PC users are still running Windows 7 and are unable to update to the latest app versions that require Windows 10 or 11. When they updated Kindle for Mac recently Amazon did a hard cutoff preventing the old versions from downloading any books at all. It would not surprise me if they do the same thing for Kindle for PC now that their new DRM has been out for awhile without being broken yet. Amazon went back and produced KFX versions of even very old books. Lack of KFX format has nothing to do with this cutoff. |

A while back, I had heard that 1.17.0 was the newest version with removable DRM.

With the way things have been going, I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who breaks the current DRM thinks twice about how they share their findings — if they share their findings at all.

To bring you up to date on my previous posts. Windows 11, laptop. Kindle updated the program automatically without my permission. DRM removal no longer works. Reinstalled old version of Kindle, version 1.40.1. Made sure auto-update in Tools-Options was un-selected. Back to normal
