Thanks for that suggestion. However the first thing I did when I got the new iPad was to back up and restore the old one. Although Kindle was restored along with everything else, it wanted me to sign in again and unfortunately that doesn't work because that account and the email address associated with it are no longer active. So I just get an error saying something like "We cannot find an account with that email address". Either that or it says the account needs to be verified by sending an email, which of course I can't retrieve because that email no longer works.

So I just keep going in circles with this. It seems I'm not going to be able to retain access to those books. There are 4 of them, all musical texts, which I need for reference so I'll have to acquire them some other way. Which really annoys me because I bought them legitimately through Amazon and feel aggrieved that they won't refund me or agree to merge my two accounts or whatever. Maybe they simply cannot access my old account either..

One solution that should work perfectly. Buy the books again.

AFAIK Amazon has never merged accounts or transferred books from one account to another.

This thread is an example why it's a good idea to always remove the DRM and make personal backups of your purchased books. You just cannot rely on any company keeping your purchases for you forever. Amazon has been known to close people's accounts for different reasons, in which case you would also lose access to your Kindle purchases.

I've bought ebooks from retailers gone defunct many years ago. I still have all those books, because I made backups. And I always advise others to do so as well, unless you're the type who reads once and deletes. In which case backing up anything wouldn't matter to you.

Yeah right. Obviously I'd rather not have to. Being texts they are not cheap!

Yes that's what they told me.

As far as backing up goes, lesson learnt! Though I don't see why Amazon would close someone's account without good reason. They didn't actually close mine, it just seems to have fallen by the wayside somehow.

The problem is, no one knows what a good reason might be from Amazon's POV. When they close an account, they won't give you any details, just some general blah-blah-blah about you having violated Terms & Conditions or something like it. It might be one too many returns of physical goods (even if defective or returned for some other perfectly legitimate reason), it might be a misunderstanding with you being completely innocent and so on. They won't discuss it with you and they won't give you the real reason. You can just never be sure.

(No, I haven't had my Amazon account closed; but I've read posts by people who have).

I had a similar experience with Facebook a while ago. My account got hacked and they closed it because of the resulting activity and even though they recognised that it had been hacked and was nothing to do with my activity, they refused to open it again. I had done a lot of work to set up ad campaigns, build up a list of followers etc. to promote my music and I basically had to start from scratch with a new account.

Yeah, that's just it. Those huge companies have too much power over our lives IMO. I'm not a luddite, I use Amazon, Google, Microsoft etc. etc. But I do try to make my personal backups wherever possible (for example, I back up my Gmail regularly to an external drive). Because if something happens, you'll be like a slave without any rights; you'll just lose your stuff and you cannot do anything to restore it.

You won't believe it but I just had another call with an Amazon agent and he was able to resolve the issue completely! I have to say I am impressed with them this time. They had actually sent a couple of emails asking me to get in touch again to try and resolve it so I thought I'd try one more time.

The guy stayed with it and managed to find the old account and change the email address associated with it. So I can now access the account and download those books to my new iPad. Brilliant!

Thanks for your help with this and to everyone who contributed. And yes, I will be backing up all my Kindle books!

Wow. Amazon has actually helped a customer! I'm impressed.

Glad you got those books back and didn't have to repurchase them.

Maybe someone from Amazon was lurking here at MR and decided to help to them.

now USE download and Transfer by USB (for those that allow) and add them to Calibe (sans DRM)

Back when my father was in the military, he used to say quartermasters came in two flavours. One flavour would say you couldn't have what you were entitled to since it was too much work and the other would work to get you something that you weren't entitled to even it involved extra work. You seem to have run into the customer service equivalent of the second type.
