It's admittedly been a while since I've read it, but "repulsive" isn't a word I would attach to any Irving novel.

He is masterful at creating characters you grow to care about, even if you don't always agree with their actions.

I haven't gotten to Owen Meany yet, but really liked the movie version, Simon Birch. (Fun fact: Irving didn't think the book would make a good movie and asked them to change the name. But he came up with the name Simon Birch.)

Another terrific Irving movie where I haven't yet read the book: A Door in the Floor from the book A Widow for One Year.

The description leaves a lot out. It has been ages since I read it, but IIRC, Jenny wounds a man at a theater because he was sexually harassing her -- so she slashed him in the arm with a small knife she carried for self-defense.

She is a very interesting person...

Well, that had me listening to jazz last night. Started with Thelonious Monk, went on to Jellyroll Morton, stayed up until stupid o'clock and wound down with Louis Armstrong. One or two drinks on the way. Thank you for a pleasant evening with three of the greats.

My only experience with Faulkner was trying The Sound and the Fury, which I didn't get along with at all. But I really do want to try again. I loved the movie adaptation of Intruder in the Dust.
