It is most likely controlled by Amazon’s WebLab system. That lets them turn features on and off remotely in Kindle apps and devices.

I put the serial in and it's registered to my account, so hopefully I'll luck out and it'll stay on there so I won't have to buy another one. If I do, it'll either be the Scribe simply because it's not tiny ********* it might actually be usable for me, or I'll just get whatever the cheapest one is and leave it in a drawer after registering. I've been lurking since 2018. I don't need help but I have some information that might be useful to Mac users: I have a 13" mid 2012 MacBook Pro running "High Sierra" (OS10.13.6) and Kindle version 1.20.2. Because my OS is technically "old" I don't get offered Kindle updates and they can't be force-installed because they are incompatible. I just bought a new (2023) book from Amazon and when I tried to download it into Kindle for Mac, an error message popped up on screen: PCMAC_126_Delivery_Error_Upgrade_Mac I saw no prior warning that I wouldn't be able to read this book on my Mac (but obviously I expected this because I've been following the discussions here!) So I charged up my old "Kindle Touch", downloaded the book to it and then connected the Kindle Touch to the Mac via USB. I opened its "Documents" folder. From there I was able to drag the AZW file into "Calibre" and convert it to epub for my iPad (which I prefer). (I've been using Calibre since 2018 when I found the de-drm instructions. The latest version that will run on this OS is 3.48.) I realise that I haven't posted anything that isn't already known but I hope this info. is useful to someone, anyway. Greetings from the Greek island of Crete! |

Just to clarify, since I can't edit, I clicked on the Kindle icon and opened its "Documents" folder - not the Documents folder of the Mac!

But perhaps you'll prefer to stick with the old MacOS and have a Kindle for Mac that doesn't update. | |

Exactly that. And I have software that probably won't work if I update. Also, I think that the next OS requires the use of Apple's new filing system that my other Macs can't read. So, being old (72) and somewhat averse to change, I'll stick with it as long as possible.

So, I've been absent for a while. I see that Amazon is doing a new crackdown. I am familiar with method 3, download and transfer by USB as I have been doing that for years. My question is this: Of the 3 devices registered to my account, is anyone of them the better choice in terms of de-drm and/or conversion to epub? My registered devices are: 1. a K3/Kindle Keyboard (registered in 2011), 2. a K4B (registered in 2014), and 3. my Kindle Oasis 3(?) (registered October 2020). Thanks! I'm so far behind I'm still running Calibre 4.23. I'm investigating changes and plugin updates, etc. |

I use my Kindle Keyboard which downloads a file that can be converted to whatever you want. I can't speak to the others. Jim |

See the section "Obtaining and verifying older versions of Kindle for PC/Mac software" in the first post in this thread. Note that older versions are unable to download books published since the beginning of this year.

First I want to thank all the hard work people put into trying all the various fixes and time to help, I really appreciate it! I just tried a couple of things from the first post. I'm very tech challenged so please keep that in mind. Method 1, I couldn't get it to work. No matter what instructions I followed, it kept updating from 1.17 to 1.3 Method 2a, I'm using Kindle for PC 1.14.1 because it was the 'one' that never updated automatically for me. However, the KFX_begone4.bat file trick still doesn't allow me to download the newer books [that I'm assuming are KFX because when I try to download them it gives me the error "Your kindle requires an app to view this content.." I also tried it with 1.17, but I can't get that version to stop updating. So my question is, I just want to understand if the above fixes work for everyone, and it's something I'm doing wrong, or if they only work sometimes. Not wanting to take anything away from the hard work people put into all of this, I just want to know if it's me. |
