Does the kepub/epub distinction matter if you're using Koreader on a Kobo?

It doesn't matter if you use KOReader.

But if RMSDK was the current version on Kobo, (IMHO) very little reason for using KePub.

For me, it's not specifically the book. In my experience, RMSDK is better at page layout than Access, so I expect that is so on a newer one. Being able to switch between traditional ePub pages and the kepub-like page numbering sounds nice.

It's other stuff. Like I didn't know you could dismiss the book ads on the homescreen (indeed, one of the reviews I read for the Era said you cannot make any changes to the home screen). I didn't know you could add fonts.

I have heard you can control series and collections via Calibre, like you can on Kobo. Is that correct?

When you sort your library by author, will it stack the books by a single author so I don't have three pages of Stephen King? (Kindle doesn't do this, but Kobo and Nook do.)

I have not used that device but have used the Touch HD 3. It is the most configurable ereader I've ever used. The buttons can be reassigned and also have 3 options (click, double click and long press) which have many options. You can get rid of the adds on the home screen. You can rearrange the bottom icons on the home screen, remove them or assign different functions or apps. The Library is great and works like a phone with an accelerator (instead of just jumping from screen to screen) it scrolls continuously depending on how fast you flick it.

When transferring books from Calibre it creates series and collections (as genres) on the first transfer without having to reconnect like the Kobo.

When reading a book there are nine tap zones which can be reassigned to many options. You can define all four swipe gestures (up, down, right, left). Dragging your finger on the right and left edges of the display can preform various user defined options (lighting, both warm and brightness, font size etc.).

You can add fonts.

Thanks for all of that. I have seen videos by this guy before, but missed this one.

I was glad to see how much he liked the shape of the Era. When I first saw it I thought it would be uncomfortable to hold, but he seemed to love it.

BTW: I know the Pocketbook discussion was a huge derail of this thread, but for me I've realized that it is because in the end, I really do prefer ePub and RMSDK's layout and font rendering.

I use kepub, because I like the additional features, but have thought how nice it would be to marry the two, which is something Pocketbook looks to have done.

It doesn't exist the perfect ereader: Pocketbook has a good renderer but, unlike Kepub renderer in Kobo, it has no pop up notes nor the ability of sharpening fonts. And You have limited choices about line spacing and margins (only 3, like Kindle).

The renderer of Koreader IMHO is the best and You have pop up notes and great choices about font sharpening and line spacing and many other things. Of course Koreader is not so well integrated with the rest of the Kobo or Pocketbook system (statistics ecc.)

Standard eBooks publishes three different ePubs for each book — Compatible ePub, KePub and Advanced ePub — maybe this would be a good source for a book testing.

The PockeBooks have two readers built in. One for ePub 2 and one for ePub 3. You can specifically choose one by long pressing on the book and tapping Open With PB Reader (EPUB 3) or PB Reader (EPUB 2).

So far I haven't noticed much difference.

I was glad to find that, as I kept wondering why I was going back instead of forward, not realizing the default was two small back taps on the bottom. I changed most of the right side to forward and most of the left side to back. (Except for the small section on the top left, which takes you back out of the book.) Top right is for bookmarks.

All the titles of an author are grouped and separated by letters (which you can access directly). When you click on an author's name, all their books appear (which can be ordered in different ways) and if they belong to a series, this is also separated in case you want to access only the books in the series.

A long press on any book (no matter if it is ordered by date, genre, series, author...) gives you the option to access all the books of the author or series (and to open with any reading program installed: PBReader (epub 3), PBReader (epub 2), KOReader and CoolReader).
