What matters is what I want to do - not whether a version is newer.
At Boox you are limited to a maximum of 64 GB.
With my Likebook Alita (Ares) I have 32 GB internal + 512 GB SD constantly and sometimes also a 4 TB hard disk via USB OTG.
But you can draw better on Boox devices.

Google is totally erratic at incrementing Android. It's a mess. So if a version you are familiar with works and does what you want there is no simple advantage to an upgrade. There may be other more compelling reasons to choose Boyue Likebook.

There is one advantage. When the app you want to update no longer woks on Android 8.1 but does work on Android 10, you'll wish you had an Onyx Boox.

Not with the limitations that the Boox devices offer.

All installed apps will certainly work as long as I use the devices - maybe at some point I won't be able to update them if an update requires a higher version - but that won't bother me either.
And whether I want to do something with new apps - I tend to think no.
