You can use the KoboTouch driver to send epub books to your Kobo without a chance of conversion to kepub. You use the KoboTouchExtended driver to send epubs with an option to convert to kepubs. The Extended tab in the KTE's configuration has a checkbox for Enable Extended Kobo Features.

If Kobo drops Adobe DRM, then they will lose many customers as it would not longer work with Overdrive. So in terms of their business, Access is the one that n go.

You can also use the KoboTouchExtended driver to send ePub as long as you make ePub the first in the list for supported formats.

You do of course have a point here. Though if Kobo did want to lend from libraries without paying the Adobe tax I'm sure the problem would not be insurmountable. After all, Amazon seems to manage to lend from US libraries without Adobe involvement.

However, I was expressing my personal preference, as were you. Quite frankly, I don't expect either format to go any time soon.

That isn't how the extended driver works. If an epub is to be sent to the device, it will be transformed to kepub. If you have kepub in the library, they will be sent if kepub is first in the choice, but, if epub is first, the epub will be used if there is both an epub and a kepub in the library.

Kepubs are about not using the RMSDK. They are about Kobo controlling as much of the environment as possible. If they only use the RMSDK, they can't use their own DRM. That means that for every book with DRM downloaded to the device will mean that they pay the license fee to Adobe. At the moment, I am pretty sure that they only pay Adobe for DRM protected epubs that are downloaded from the store.

Add to that, if they change to the RMSDK, they have to convert all the locations currently used for kepubs (current reading position, locations used in bookmarks) to that used by the RMSDK.

And are you saying that the latest version of the RMSDK supports image zoom and handling footnotes? And they can track the position well enough to do the internal stats? Without those functions, there is no way Kobo would move to RMSDK.

And they aren't likely to remove RMSDK because of the DRM. And that it does give them support for PDF.

If the current version of RMSDk was abl to display ePub 3 as well (or better) then Access, I would think most would want to use ePub as the typesetting is much better. I would love Kobo to upgrade to the current RMSDK. Access is a lot of a mess (IMHO).

I do not know about popup footnotes in the latest RMSDK. But I don't think there is image zoom. But it would still be better to have the latest RMSDK for better ePub 3 support with the better typesetting. With the latest RMSDK, there is better font handling in CSS and that I would like.

Kobo can keep Access, but do you think they'd ever have all the display/typesetting bugs fixed?

I have no idea. But, as I have expressed before, very few people care about the typography issues. Just look here and count how many questions there are about it. And how many are there about image zoom and footnote popups. Because of that, changing completely to the RMSDK is just not important to them. And neither is fixing most of the typography issues you think are so important.

One advantage of having the latest RMSDK is that you can test your ePub in the latest desktop RMSDK. You can't do that with Access that I know of.

Since there’s no official way to create a kepub outside of whatever Kobo does to make them I don’t think this is an issue they care about. Clearly they’re able to produce a kepub from an epub in a way that satisfies them.

You mean using the latest version of ADE that you tell everyone is the spawn of the devil and must be avoided at all costs?

Yes, I am overstating things, but, not by much.

Wait...I thought that Overdrive books were sent to the Kobo in kepub format if the Overdrive account is linked to the Kobo account? Are they actually sent in epub?

Wouldn't that mean they would only be able to sell to people with Kobos? As long as they also sell epubs people with other epub ereaders can buy books from Kobo.
