New Kobos - no micro SD ahhh! no buy

So I was about to buy a new kobo. The kobo Clara, then I learned there was no micro sd card slot, ok what about the aura (unavailable new). Also the Aura H20, Kobo Libre, Kobo Glo HD, Kobo Aura 2. No SD slot. I am completely disappointed! I like to be able to separate my books to various sd cards, educational books, novels on another, etc ... Sure 8Gb is a lot of memory, probably enough but it looks like I will not make that new Kobo purchase. Anyone else feel the loss of the micro sd card slot? |

The Clara HD still uses an internal SD card slot for its main storage so you could still upgrade that, but yeah, the lack of an external SD card slot in the newer 300 dpi models is annoying. Unfortunately, if you want one on a more modern device, you'll have to switch to another brand like Pocketbook or something. The last Kobo to have one was the Aura H2O version 1.

But not as many comic/manga books or large scale pdfs. There's a reason why Kobo felt the need to release a 32GB version of the Aura ONE. But since it was a limited edition and they haven't done another since, it probably didn't move many units. If I wanted a dedicated 300 dpi manga reader that I could load with a 128GB or more sd card (maybe with page buttons and screen larger than 6 inches too), I'd probably switch to Pocketbook, unfortunately.

I didn't know that! Unfortunately, I'd need at least 50GB to fit my collection (a lot of programming pdfs and Japanese light novels which are image heavy) so no new Kobo device for me yet. The water proofing is a nice to have but if that's a major thing holding back a model with an external card slot, I'd be a happy customer without that protection. Until then, my Glo HD is good enough, although I might pick up a Clara if it's on sale.

I don't think the Pocketbook InkPad 3 Pro has an external SD card slot (not according to the specs on their website anyway.)

Storage not a problem on 8G ereader?
 Quote:
Earlier ereaders, (especially the 2G models!) had a greater need for an SD Slot. Unless you have a lot of scanned PDFs or graphic novels the 6.7 G Byte for books out of 8GB could be about 6,000 books. That's nearly 17 years of reading at one book a day. I've about 1,800 inc some old PDF scanned books and less than 1/2 free space used on the Libra. I actually took a 32 G SD card out of the Nook Touch and put it into a 10" tablet for PDFs and put a 4 G SD card in the Nook, which is still much less less than free on the Libra. I'd be more concerned about a phone without SD card slot due to videos, HD photos and bloated applications. Yet the iPhone is much more expensive than my Alcatel, which has 16G internal and an SD card slot AND lets me I/O any kind of content just as USB storage. It's a long time since a Kindle had an SD slot. Only the Sony Electronic Paper (which can't do ebooks, only PDFs) has a walled garden like iPhone and iPad. Certainly and SD slot is a must for me on tablet or phone, but not on ereaders with 6G + free. Last edited by Quoth; 10-21-2019 at 09:40 AM.

internal storage used 3.5 GB, external SD card storage used 6.32 GB. total=9.82 GB. some will have double even treble that amount of books on their ereader's. best wishes koboy

@christopher22, why is it that 32GB is not enough storage?

 32 or 8?

Do you mean to direct your question to Koboy? 32Gb would be nice but the internal storage of the new kobo's is only 8! If we could implement a card reader from the new kobo's I would be overjoyed with that. Otherwise .. bah humbug! |
