I just saw the ad on Amazon and my first thought was that they are trying to reinvent the wheel, only not as good as the predecessor (for a higher price). Honestly, for the basic Kindle they should have just left it the same, and maybe even slightly decreased the price. No redesign or new materials cost, maybe a slight increase in processor speed...

But corporations will do as corporations do... whatever "looks" best for their bottom line.

I honestly don't understand what you mean. The new Basic Kindle seems to be the same as the old Basic Kindle, but with a frontlight. Not sure how that is reinventing the wheel or makes it not as good as the predecessor.

If i'm misunderstanding you, could you clarify? I'm genuinely curious.

I'm surprised they didn't bump the resolution up to 212ppi. Then it would match the Aura Edition 2.

I'm still rockin' with my 7th gen basic Kindle from 2014. When it gives up the ghost, I'll replace it.

Funny how different we all are. Resolution doesn't do much for me. It has made the fonts flimsier for my eyes over the years so I needed the bold option badly. But that isn't really the same as the super contrast in the older basics. The one with buttons. But now I need light. So if they had put buttons back on this basic with light, I would have gladly bought it.
I like the lightness of the current basic when my wrists get tired. THe oasis2 can get heavy then. But i need the light and I need buttons.

If they would let me trade-in my old (still working) B&N Simple Touch for a good discount on this new Kindle Basic, I'd buy one. As a gift for one of my family members. I'm quite happy with my PW4 myself.

In a month or so this will be the "last model" and they will run a Fire Sale on it.

I would have liked to see a 300 ppi screen just like all the other Kindles have. Maybe on the next basic. It would probably have been too close to the Paperwhite 4, but if they put buttons on the next Paperwhite then that could be reason enough for an upgrade. Then they would have the perfect line up. IMO.

I suppose they want there to be a noticeable difference between the basic model and the others, and that is why they’re keeping the crappy resolution.

I was looking at buying a refurbished Kindle 4 yesterday, can get both this and cover for half the price of this one, and in some ways this was my favorite reader. It was sooo light, with wonderfully placed buttons, and battery actually did last a month of actual reading! (And it had the progress bar which I loved).

I was still tempted by this one though as a cheap take everywhere reader, especially as it comes in white. I haven't had a white ereader since my very first kindle, the kindle 2.

At one point I had both this and the kindle 4 in my basket, and took them out.

The contrast of the kindle 4 was also excellent, no light layer, no touch layer. I’m still tempted by the new one though...
