• The download link to manually update is removed to not destroy any more old Kindles that are not yet on 5.9.7
• OTA updates to 5.10.1.1 probably check that the device is on 5.9.7 before scheduling
• To get 5.10.1.1 the workaround appears to be to manually update to 5.9.7 and then wait for the OTA to 5.10.1.1 (or install the file manually if you have access to the previously downloadable file)

We seen the reports. It is not, as I initially thought, a problem of an automatic update, but a general problem with the update.

Did the CSR mention what the issues were? I'm a bit concerned as I seem to recall my Kindle being on 5.9.5 or 5.9.6 prior to update. I think it was an OTA update, too. I seem to recall downloading the new firmware on the PC (for posterity) after my PW was already updated.

I'm also curious, I updated my freshly unboxed kindle manga (Great timing on that, eh?) to 5.10.1.1 from 5.9.4

EDITED to add about 9.5 hours later: Great timing because I just got it this week after ordering in September. In the meantime, a 32 GB kindle paperwhite became a thing sold in America.

The exact cutoff was not disclosed to me. They did not say specifically that 5.9.7 is the only FW from which the update is safe, just that 5.9.7 was high enough to not expect any ill effects.

What happened to others was bricked devices, disappearing books, unable to download books from cloud. Maybe 5.9.x is all safe since the jump from 5.8.x to 5.9.x was pretty big under the hood. But I am not sticking my neck out. All I wanted to say is that 5.9.7 is okay, and below you need to use caution if you attempt to manually upgrade.

It is strange. My new Paperwhite came with 5.10.0.1. I downloaded whatever .bin there was for it yesterday, but today there is no Paperwhite generation 10 page on updates page. I am debating about applying the .bin file. Probably will wait for something to show up again.

I don't know if there is any reason to (or not to) get firmware 5.10.1.2 for the Paperwhite 4, but here's the link to it.

Note: The software linked below can only be used on the Paperwhite 4:

Be sure they haven't hidden it because it causes something bad to happen to the Paperwhite 4. I'm guessing the reason it was hidden is because of the problem with 5.10.1.1 on other (pre-5.9.7) Kindles. It was probably easiest the revert back to the pre-5.10.1.1 download page (which, unfortunately, didn't have the Paperwhite 4 listed yet).

No joy; tried this for my Voyage which is on 5.9.7 and got an error message when I disconnect the USB cable that "An invalid update file has been loaded on your device...".

The latest firmware for the Voyage is 5.10.1.1:

I'm sorry, I should have made it clearer that the 5.10.1.2 firmware was only available for the Paperwhite 4. (Original post edited.) I'm glad you were able to get it sorted out and that JimmyR stepped in. I've got to be more careful when I post.

I went ahead and applied the 5.10.1.2 .bin file I had previously downloaded. (The PW4 help and updates page has still not re-appeared.)

Everything is fine, Disable Touch Screen feature is there, etc. I don’t altogether like some of the UI changes they made with the latest updates (e.g. it takes extra tap to get to X-ray, the labels on the standard toolbar do not really ‘improve navigation’), but I’ll get used to it.

One thing I hope they get around to doing is to add immersion reading (even if it does not highlight words/sentences and only turns pages at the appropriate time).

And I intend to keep sending kindle-feedback requests to add support for Bluetooth keyboard and page-turning devices.

You would notice right away. A bungled update would make your PW near useless after the update. If you still have your books that had before the update, can open them and download new books from the cloud, especially documents that you uploaded yourself, then you are going to be okay.

If you remember if you had text bolding, custom fonts and return library books directly on device available before the update, you are most likely going to be okay.

I'm a bit confused about all of these updates.

I updated my PW3 at the end of last month so that it had the new option to show a battery percentage at the top of the screen.

I've now bought a PW4 and I can't see the same option on it.

It has the 5.10.0.2 firmware. Is that the latest version?

No, 5.10.1.2 is latest for PW4, see post #110 for download link.
