I think the uneveness shows up on camera as different colored areas and in real life as darker and lighter patches?

Exactly. For instance, I can tell in the above pictures that both of them are being held the same orientation despite not being able to see the buttons on one of the pictures. All these pictures look exactly the same as my Oasis.

That is to say, well done to Amazon for the consistency, but it's a shame it's not consistently good enough for me.

That wouldn't be acceptable to me (as mine isn't).

I can't convince someone that the screen isn't good, but I do know that this drives me nuts.

Just trying to make a point about how the light source is easy to tell on all these pictures. The illumination of the screen is brightest closest to the buttons-side of the device, and just gets dingier as it goes across the device. Le sigh.

I think this is not correct, or at least it was not mentioned in the announcement, which stated that Audible feature would be coming to 8th generation Kindles (Kindle Oasis 1 and Kindle) ‘in coming months’, and could have said the same about Invert but did not:

The new Oasis has a different CPU and graphics chip. Invert black and white might require chip support to do it without distracting visual artifacts when turning pages.

Of course, I hope this is proved wrong, unless I wind up buying the new Oasis.

Ive got 2 Paperwhites and the new Oasis. I can only tell when they're side by side with the same light setting but 1 PW has the bright white screen, 2nd PW has a green cast (which I never even knew before comparing). This new Oasis has a faint pink cast and I found I love that tint. It feels warmer somehow.

You will never get perfection, not on an e-ink screen. I have a choice of reading on a PW2, two Voyages, a Kobo H20, and an old Nook Glow, plus my new Oasis. All have different screens.

I believe it's possible to get close to perfect in the sense that it's not distracting every time I read. Lighting HAS improved on the Kindles. With the illumination off, I have zero issues with the e-ink. It's the lighting system which needs to improve just a little more.

It's a night and day difference between this new Oasis and my Voyage. It's the first time where I feel they've finally implemented a decent solution.

If yours is showing colour variations, I'd send it back.

Me too. I've owned one KK, two KTs, two PWs, two Voyages, one Oasis 1 and one Oasis 2. Never had any problem with them. I have also owned a Kobo Aura H2O and had no problem with that either, though I don't think its screen was as good as that of the most recent Kindles from the Voyage onwards.

I think there is a lot of subjectivity in this and clearly some people have more sensitive eyes than others.

That's exactly it. And as I've said each year I've been disappointed, - I wish I weren't so discerning when it comes to display uniformity.
