So I have got to stage 5 and it isnt working. I have followed point 4 but not 4 a. as you say not. So what next?

--scrub this, I re-flashed the firmware and did ;installHTML again and this time it worked fine saying I was jail broken.

So on to stage 6....

Ok on 6 of step 6 I place the hotfix in place, but I cant do an update, when I go back it has disappeared. When I go in to update update is black for a split second then grey's out and the hotfix file has disappeared, so it ran OK? I Will wait for advice......

Welcome to that exceptional 10%.

- - - - -

Follow the current jailbreak directions, with the exception of taking the branch to the older jail break.
That is: stay with the current set of directions even when told to transfer your attention to the older jail break.
I.E: Do not skip steps #5 and #6 like everyone else with a PW-2 does. Instead, do them.

Having completed steps #5 and #6, leaves you looking at step #7 - -
Also at that point, your Kindle is jail broken (you can ignore that) and running the factory build of firmware 5.4.3.2 -
So instead of updating in step #7 to a newer firmware, just update to the consumer build of firmware 5.4.3.2, using the Amazon PW2 Update package for that purpose.

Then do step #8 just to complete the entire procedure.
Which will also help you if the device should accidental (your view point) update to 5.8.8.

The current jail break is at (where you should go AFTER reading the rest of this post):
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275877

= = = =

I guess I don't have to tell you how to get an older than current update package from the Amazon servers.
You either know how or still have the 5.4.3.2 update package you used on your own device.

- - - - -

Also, consider just using our build of the Skipstone browser rather than the Amazon provided browser -
Then you can skip all of this c*** about getting the device to run only 5.4.3.2
Although I do suggest that you not run anything newer than 5.8.7.
Hello. I also have a PW2 but it's jailbroken and on 5.8.8 firmware. Can I do these steps to back to 5.8.7?

No.

If it is jail broken, then you can install USBnetworking and the Rescue Pack (Cowards Rescue Pack addition not required).

Then using KindleTool, open the Amazon 5.8.7 update package for your device and follow the manual "de-bricking" procedure to re-install the contents.

I.E: Consider your device running 5.8.8 to be 'bricked' is probably the easiest way to get you headed in the right direction.

Great to know! I'll try to find these tools and try it today. Thanks.

I can not understand what you did.

List, in order, each thing you did and the result.

Sorry,

From your link.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275877

So I got to,
==========
Download and install the current 'hotfix'
The current version is attached to its release post, see:
Jail Break Survival Code
Spoiler:

Unarchive the release archive package.
Connect Kindle to PC with the USB cable.
Place the Update_jailbreak_hotfix_*_install.bin in the topmost, visible level of USB storage (alongside of /documents).
Eject and/or Safely Remove (term depends on OS) the Kindle, USB storage.
Remove the USB cable.
get stuck here --------> Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Update Your Kindle

but I cannot update the kindle, but the file is there in root initially. and the "update Your kindle" is briefly black for a second and goes greyed out and the hotfix file disappears from root

So its applied itself? which sounds weird....

Please update you "info box" to indicate which model Kindle (by our nickname) you have or mention that information in every post.

If that did not work, and it didn't, then install it with MrPI.

According to the first page it says I am jailbroken...so I'm a bit confused. I cannot however update it from the factory initial bin.

Are you already at the 5.8.8 firmware level? If so, that would explain this as that firmware defeats the downgrade operation. In that case you will need to treat this as a rescue operation.

And there is no need to install a "factory initial" package if you are already jail broken.
You would only have to replace it.

"factory initial" means:
The first image that is ever loaded on a device, while still in the factory, solely for the purpose of production testing.
It is not intended to be used anywhere but on the assembly line.
And is normally replaced with the customer firmware before shipment.

The only reason we use it, is because it can be jail broken.
But your device is already jail broken, so what is the point?

Then I am getting confused, I have gone back from 5.8.7 to 5.4.3.2 initial.

I got to step 6 but I cannot install the jailbreak hotfix as per instructions. So I simply stop now and run the kindle as is? ie I am not to care about the reest of the instructions? so I assume I can jump to the later steps and stop the Kindle "automagically" upgrading?

No I was on 5.8.7.1 (from memory) I installed the 5.4.3.2 initial bin (factory?) update and it now says I am on 5.4.3.2 in the "about" menu.

This is as far as I have got, I dont seem to be able to deploy the jailbreak or at least it appears not but the kindle has "you are now jailbroken" in the initial page but I do not know how, hence I am confused.

All I really want to do is lock the kindle in this state, so it cant upgrade itself to 5.8.8, assuming the web browser now works, I cant test that until tomorrow
