Jailbreak 5.7.4 >> install MRPI & KUAL >> install packages >> upgrade to 5.8.5 >> reinstall packages above? Many thanks!

Note: MrPI can do "batch" updates - Put all the update_*.bin packages into /mrpackages at the same time, trigger MrPI once, your done. (You may have to restart your Kindle to get the font add-in working properly.)

Ok, I simply had to reinstall the kual booklet bin, my mistake if that was obvious for other people And I can confirm that KindleLazy (and the modules it relies on) work fine on for PW3, 5.8.5 |

The KUAL Booklet comes in an update_*.bin named package. It is subject to the same rule as all other update_*.bin named packages, they must be re-installed after each update. (A safe over simplification.) I thought that was clear, but perhaps I need to make it explicit in the directions. And MrPI can 'batch' install them all in one run. Just put all of the update_*.bin packages in /mrpackages at the same time, trigger MrPI, and your done. (Except for the font add-in, which may require you to restart the Kindle to get it working correctly.) Note: the "Booklet" version of KUAL works on all touch screen devices, including the KT and PW-1. Since the 'Main' screen of the Kindle is also a Booklet - Amazon is not likely to drop support for Booklets like they did for Kindlets. Everything you see on a Kindle depends on DCbooklet - so it isn't going away, ever. (I want to save # 12 000 for something really significant, so I am gone again.) While researching things, I have noticed there are two builds of 5.8.5 - One for the 8th gen devices, one for the older devices. So far the only things I have noticed for certain, is the build for the 8th gen devices adds support for Bluetooth and drops support for Kindlets (although the code isn't gone, just disabled by a flag). But that user interface is spread over 643 *.jar files, I may never be finished reading them all. The following will only mean anything to those who read Java, but classpath in the start-up command is: Code: /usr/java/bin/cvm -Xmx26m -Xgc:youngGen=6m,freeMemShrinkThreshold=32% -Dsun.awt.exception.handler=com.amazon.agui.swing.event.EventQueueExceptionHandler -Xbootclasspath/a:/usr/java/lib/localedata.jar:/usr/java/lib/charsets.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/concierge-1.0.0.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/icu4j.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/utilities.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/json_simple-1.1.jar -Dsun.boot.library.path=/usr/java/lib -cp /opt/amazon/ebook/lib:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/imageviewer-fr.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MediaPlayer.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/demoactivator-fr.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSDK-ja.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSharingService-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReadingTimer-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSDK-impl-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MobiReader-impl-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/EndActions-ja.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/LanguageLayer-it.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/tardis-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/AdManager-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/app_utilities.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MediaPlayer-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/kafui-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/tardis-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderContentSDK-sq.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/VocabBuilderSDK-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/utilities-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReadingStreams.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/PurchaseManager.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/Xray-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/utilities-fr.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/kafui-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/kafindexer.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReadingStreamsMessageEncoder.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/app_utilities-assets.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/VocabBuilderSDK-it.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/HTMLReader-impl-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/VocabBuilderSDK-es.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/HTMLReader-impl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/WirelessHandler.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/oobe-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSharingService-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/KindleDeviceServicesAbstraction-2.2.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/wikipedia-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSharingService-it.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/displaycontroller-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/AdManager-es.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSDK-impl-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/translator-fr.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/home-es.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSDK-impl-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/imageviewer-it.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/utilities.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/TopazReader-impl-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/HTMLReader-impl-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/VocabBuilderSDK-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/tardis-es.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/AuthorProfiles-it.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/LanguageLayer-ja.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/Reader-plugin-es.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/detail_view-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderContentSDK-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/EndActions-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSDK-impl-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/kaf-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MerchantManager-impl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/LanguageLayer-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/sqlite.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderContentSDK-ja.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MerchantManager-impl-it.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MobiReader-impl-sq.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/translator.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderSDK.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/Reader-assets.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MediaPlayer-impl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/home-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/AdManager.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/kaf-fr.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/PDFReader-impl-zh.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/app_utilities-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/VocabBuilderSDK.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/translator-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/PurchaseManager-impl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/junit.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/MediaPlayer-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/LanguageLayer-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/displaycontroller-de.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/demoactivator-pt.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/RAMP.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReaderContentSDK-fr.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/AuthorProfiles-ru.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/PDFReader-impl-ja.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/KindletSystemPlugins-2.2.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/imageviewer-nl.jar:/opt/amazon/ebook/lib/ReadingTimer-ja.jar:/opt/amazon/ Oh, and a note for someone's comment in the past two weeks - some of it IS Java8. Updated my PW2 to 5.8.5.0.1. The JB is still intact and hacks are working after a reinstall: python, screensaver, font, KUAL.

After you (or someone else) provides the initial factory firmware for that model. If you haven't yet stored anything to the visible, USB storage and you have access to a Linux machine, it could be you - if so, PM me for directions. I guess that the above means you have discovered the directions, and read Step #1. The other poster here about the PW-3, 32GB device did not. Last edited by knc1; 11-01-2016 at 12:14 PM. |

So... apologies if this question is a little dumb, I do follow the forum but in a lazy mode, since I jailbroked my good old PW2 in the past with the old method so I never really looked into the messages carefully. Unfortunately today I found my beloved pw2 screen broke. :'( I am going to build a PW3, but: is my understanding correct that at present any known firmware version for PW3 (sold in Europe, if that matters) is closed-jailbreakable? I guess the instructions are these: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=275877 Since I am here, a little OT: if I buy the special offer version - that might arrive earlier - can I remove the special offers online and in a matter of minutes before jailbreaking the new kindle? Does it make any difference at all, jailbreak-wise or amazon-wise, that a kindle was original a special offers model? Thanks! |

there are a lot of successful jailbreaks of pw2/3 with special offers (seems no need to disable SO)
