Overdrive book renewal question

Hello, I have a checkout that I'm not going to have time to finish, so I clicked the Renew link. Now my checkout list tells me it expires in 3 days, and the book also appears in my Holds list saying I'm next in line. Do I remain next in line if someone else places a hold on it? If not, can I return the book now and immediately check out again? Thanks, CC |

APPARENTLY, THIS DIDN'T SAY WHAT I MEANT: It's been my experience that books available for immediate renewal say, "Renewed", when I click the "Renew" link, and those I'll have to wait in queue for are placed on hold. If your library works similarly to mine, then once your book either expires or you return it, you'll have to wait for the one person ahead of you to either return the book or for that person's loan to expire. In short, don't return the book early if you want to continue reading it until it expires. SO I EDITED IT AS FOLLOWS: I didn't express myself well. To clarify - when I click "Renew": 1. If the book's available, then a "Renewed" note (or something to that effect displays) 2. If the book's unavailable, i.e., someone else has it on hold, then a "Request again" note (or something to that effect) is displayed, and than after clicking that link, I am put into the hold queue. In short, don't return the book early if you want to continue reading it until it expires. Last edited by Froide; 08-27-2016 at 04:23 AM. |

Froide, My exerience has been that OverDrive aren't outright liars. Whn they say "you are next in line", they actually mean it. ... The reason you are next in line, rather than merely renewed, is because they aren't able to extend the due date and instead it manifests as a new loan -- back-to-back with the old one. You will have to re-checkout and download (ADE)/claim (Kindle) the book. |

Thanks - I returned it and got the auto-checkout notification within 2 minutes - glad to know how that works. I try to read and return promptly, but in this case I'm trying to read a series in order and the holds aren't coming off in the right sequence... |

OverDrive has an option to suspend a hold for books that you are not yet ready to read.

I just tried Renew for the first time. My book was set to expire this morning. Last night I clicked Renew. This put the book on my hold list, with me as "next in line". I had it set to the auto checkout option. This morning after the original expired, it took a few minutes, but the new checkout book did eventually automatically happen. My understanding is that "Renew" is for when nobody else has the book on hold; you are next in line after your original checkout of the book expires. "Request again" is offered when other people already have the book on hold, and you will be put into the hold queue. Google turned up this brief explanation from an Overdrive library: http://library.austintexas.libanswers.com/faq/14100 |

http://help.overdrive.com/customer/p...nextgencontent quote: Suspending a hold lets you choose a window of time where you'll make progress on a title's waiting list without having the title become available for you to borrow. For example, you might want to suspend a hold for a popular eBook if you're on a long waiting list for it, but know you'll be unable to read it because you're in the middle of another title. If you make it to the first place on the waiting list while your hold is suspended, the title will go to the next user in line until your suspension period is over. Suspending a hold Log into your Account on your library's OverDrive website. Select your Holds page. Select Suspend hold from the Options drop-down menu next to the hold you'd like to suspend. Note: The Suspend hold option is not available for all titles, like renewed titles. |

You will move up the line but when you are next in line and the book becomes available, it goes to the #2 person instead of you. So as soon as you un-suspend your hold request (assuming you had gotten to the front of the line) you get it the first time it becomes available. EDIT: ninjaed... |

I think it only offers you the Renew option when there are no other holds, so in case of Renew you would automatically get the book shortly after your original expires, as happened with my book today.

Will it let me leave a book on suspended hold if the hold queue is empty? And if a book is available to check out, is there any way to instead place it on suspended hold to lock in next-in-line status until ready for it?

There is no facility to put a currently-available book in your hold queue, so no.

Thanks for clarifying. That still sounds like an overly-complicated way of saying "it's just like checking out a book you didn't have checked out already", but... eh, same difference. |
