The guide should really make clear that it is a MUST to remove the offers before proceeding, currently it sounds as if its an optional thing.

But you can upgrade to 5.6.5 and use special jailbreak for 5.6.5: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=265675 It doesn't depend on SO. Last edited by hius07; 08-21-2016 at 01:24 AM.

Ummmm... The jailbreak works fine regardless of Special Offers. Now, the Screensavers hack doesn't work with Special Offers enabled (obviously) but that is just one of our aftermarket addons -- the ones you are interested in have nothing to do with Special Offers. ... We have had conflicting reports about using the initial factory images. A small minority of users have had issues, regarding passcode-enabled and Special Offers Kindles. I doubt it though, since the real cause seems to have been a specific combination of firmware + device model and we have stopped distributing the faulty firmware image. And there is nothing about the jailbreak that is incompatible with Special Offers. We just cannot entirely predict the effects of Amazon's initial factory image. (Amazon uses them in the factory, obviously. But they assuredly don't bother to test them with passcode-enabled or Special Offers devices, since they aren't meant for consumer use. And untested things can have unpredictable behavior...) Last edited by eschwartz; 08-21-2016 at 08:46 AM. |

That is why I wrote "consider unsubscribing" in the sentence. This jailbreak procedure is compatible with S.O. devices. Also with passcode (or password) protected Kindles. BUT Recovery from a boot-time loop IS NOT compatible with either feature. In the case of S.O. devices, the system does not export the USB drive during boot up until you have 'stroked' (or 'swiped') the screen. But in the case of a boot-time loop, the system never gets far enough to recognize the 'stroke' (or 'swipe'). In the case of a Passcode protected Kindle, the situation is similar. No boot time export of the USB drive until the Passcode is entered but the system never gets far enough for a person to enter the Passcode. The path of Current version -> Factory Initial -> 5.6.5 -> Something newer will not be any different, because it is the re-booting into the Factory Initial which breaks. One more note: Seems only to apply to the factory_PW3_5.6.1.1 package - which we removed from distribution for these very reasons. At least we did once all the Kindles in China where bricked. Perhaps a little bit of Doukan karma at work there. Last edited by knc1; 08-21-2016 at 04:09 AM.

He is now on 5.6.1.1. He can upgrade to 5.6.5 customer (not factory) and apply safe JB for 5.6.5.

Hey, I'm having some problems with jailbreaking my PW2 (prefix 9017.) I got it successfully downgraded to 5.3.4.2, but it gives me an 007 error every time I try to update with the jailbreak files on the device, and then restarts; after restarting it seems the Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin file is gone from the root directory. Anyone have any idea what's going wrong? Last edited by Althelney; 08-21-2016 at 11:44 PM. |

Many, many thanks for all the work that has gone into the jailbreak and the instructions. |

It is hard to describe the number of hours invested in this jailbreak method, including the instructions, by everyone here. (Humans are very difficult to program.)

The cloud server that refused to take down their advertising panel has been replaced. The replacement cloud server also puts up a confirmation panel but does not enforce a reading delay. Some browsers will start the download when landing on the panel, others require an additional click of the 'download now' button. Actually a good thing, the user sees the filename in large print that they are about to download. Which might minimize the 'I downloaded the wrong file' reports. = = = = Now if I can just talk the Russian server operators into doing the same thing . . . . |

Yeah, doesn't help that there's no standard universal programming language yet; if something breaks, you need specialized knowledge to fix it; and God stopped offering warranty on the hardware. We need more competition in the design and creation department. Monopoly has led to a closed system with reverse-engineering as the only option available to us, which comes with its usual reverse-engineering related quirks. |
