Naw, bad idea, that would trash any real registration file unless ash tar has the 'skip existing' option.
I keep confusing memories between my PW2 and PW3. One of them upgraded to the latest version. I think the PW2 was at 5.8.1 when I did the JB using this thread (second post, in fact). No registration used or required -- just that "register later" thing AFTER scanning for wifi, which enabled my title bar and menus (including UYK).

Considering all the folks who did this successfully, I would guess "yes". Perhaps your firmware image was corrupted -- did you check its MD5? Corrupt firmware images (wrong MD5) have caused similar problems in the past. You can read about how those problems were repaired earlier in this and other threads.

I installed Hashmyfiles and using right click option I did something that I think was checking the MD5! I just opened the MD5 file. Is that enough?

Compare the computed MD5 value for the .bin file to the value written inside the corresponding .MD5 file. They should match. At least compare the first few and last few characters...

I cant see any matching characters! I have both files .MD5 and .bin in the Hash and there are diferent coloumns containing codes that dont match! May be I dont get it and dont know how to do the check.
I did all the steps before step 7 and FW was 5.5.0. Is that not a proof of a healthy file installed? moreover Knc1 said that Kindle checks the image before installation.

Despite that image check, we had some kindles behave this way with .bin files that were incomplete (too short).

As I recall, files inside the bin file get checked, but there is a problem if the bin file is truncated so that there are missing files. We discussed that somewhere earlier in this thread as I recall. And we discussed backing the bin files inside zip files for a total file integrity check (which is still pending) for that very reason.

No such thing. No blank in the filename. RESET should be RESTORE. Dashes should be underscores. Then yes, that is what folks used to recover from this situation.

But the pw2 downgrades to 5.4.3.2 - which does allow the method you describe.
The pw3, when you did it, downgraded to 5.6.1.1 - which does allow the method you describe.

Now we are talking about a KT3 - which downgrades all the way to 5.8.0
Whoot! A two whole micro-version downgrade.
That is the one which may not fit the directions.

The KOA and the PW3 downgrade to 5.7.4 - -
I don't recall these problems on 5.7.4 (NiLuJe's PW-3 was running 5.7.4 when it was last all in one piece.)

If I had money (and time) I would purchase all the latest kindles so I could gain such experience. But matters of life and death demand my attention lately to an increasing degree. Still, my interest in hobbies persists as a welcome distraction...

For now, a PW3 is my newest kindle model.
